Is this a Hoya Diversifolia

Tempe, AZ(Zone 9a)

I just purchased this beautiful plant because I was certain that this is a Hoya, but not sure which one. I know it isn't a Hoya Carnosa. The larger leaves are dark and glossy and five inches long and pointed. I think it resembles the the Hoya Diversifolia or even maybe the H Pusilla in The Book of Hoyas. As always thanks in advance for any help.

Looks like Hoya macgillivrayi to me.

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

H. macgillivrayi was my first thought as well. Where did you get it??

in Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I don't know which hoya it is,but I do know it is pretty. :O)

Tempe, AZ(Zone 9a)

I bought this at Home Depot. It was very dry and it wasn't labeled, of course, but it was more than their other plants in six inch pots so I knew it wasn't a Philodendron ;o). I've never seen them on a pole either. I recently called their vendor to see what they are putting out and she told me the only Hoya they ever carry is Hoya Carnosa. I purchased a blooming H Multiflora there last week, so now it has become a treasure hunt for me. There are so many that are so similar - so the consensus is Hoya macgillivrayi. Thank you Gabro and dmichael for the quick responses.

Hey, that looks just like the one I got from Awanda!! Nice score Cindy!

I hate to be negative, but I find it hard to believe that Home Depot would be carrying this hoya....mulitflora is one I have seen there, along with all of the EA hoyas. Unless they have a new vendor who is dealing in the less common plants, which in itself isn't likely...

I have heard that variegated Kerri has been spotted at Home Depot, evidentally put out by a grower called Delray, out of Florida. I can't find any information about them online to see what other hoyas they carry, but if this plant IS a hoya, maybe it is also coming from them.

Gabi and dmichael, are you sure that it is macgillivrayi?

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

No i'm not sure, I just think it looks like H. macgillivrayi. It could possibly be a cornosa though.

I seem to remember a few years ago someone posting (I dont recall who) that their local home depot had a garden center employee who happened to have a friend who grew some of the less common hoyas, maybe it came from that person. I beleive the hoya that was purchased from HD that time was H. retusa. Could be wrong though! I have been before!!

Whitestone, NY(Zone 7a)

Well, here's my pic of H. macgillivrayi that I received from Awanda as well. Looks the same to me. But you never really know until there are blooms.

Well, they look the same to me...look at the leaf nodes on both plants, pretty much identical. Most Home Depots only carry what is purchased by the corporate office, and I didn't think they had much freedom or flexibility to buy locally or outside of the company, but who knows! I know where I will be going this week to see what is new, though!

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

They all do it. One of our local walmarts somehow or another buys cactus plants outside of what is purchased by the C.O. I think they are also aquiring a few H. carnosa plants from someone (and it aint me!!!) locally as all of the stores dont get them and they only get a very few at the time.

People who know people always have a way of getting things done. The HD closest to my house always has a few select plants that none of the others seem to get. The guy who heads the garden center at that store knows my face well enough that I think I could con him into stocking a few of my hoyas if I had the stock to supply them with.

I agree...looks like macgillivrayii. How much did you pay for it? (if you don't mind me asking????)

Tempe, AZ(Zone 9a)

Thanks for the confirmation Carol. It was $11.47 in a 6 inch pot. The Multiflora I found last week was $14.47 and it was blooming which helped me identify it on my own. The price tag said, "Orchid." I have found a lot of different Hoyas at Home Depot here, none at Lowe's. In the past I've also found the Hoya Polyneura, Bella, Kerrii and a Dischidia Pectinoides and they are never labeled. I always notice that, if I find something unusual that catches my eye and am asking myself, "What IS this?" invariably it's a Hoya.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Today the World....tomorrow Lowes and Home Depot. Sigh!!!

Medford, NJ

Cindy, the majority of those hoyas are Exotic Angel, a brand commonly found at Home Depot, and they DON'T grow mac.. that is why we are all a little surprised. I would also imagine that at a low price like that for a harder to find hoya, it is not good news for growers who pay alot for their stock and then spend years nurturing a plant to that size....to find the BIG BOX practically giving it away.

Though I adore getting a bargain, and we are talking about only a few plants here and there around the country, I don't WANT Home Depot or Lowes getting a foothold in the hoya business. I miss the old garden centers, and felt that a few dollars more for a plant that was properly cared for was well worth the price.

I'm sure it has to be some type of bizzare anomaly for a HD to aquire this plant for sale. Unless EA and other large Florida commercial growers have figured out a way to tissue culture and massively accelerate growth patterns on the more exotic Hoyas, most Hoyas just grow to darn slow for large commercial growers to want to bother with. They would have to charge far more for them then your typical consumer would want to spend. All that being said, nice score Cindy!

Tempe, AZ(Zone 9a)

First of all, this is Arizona - 115 - 120 high temps in the summers, where we will never recover from our 10 year drought, so I am certain there is very little market for tropical plants unless you are a determined collector and know how to grow these wonderful plants. Most people who shop at Lowe's here buy Cactus.

Secondly, they are not labeled, so very few people even know what they are - until now. They are not Exotic Angel plants, they have no labels. Our big box stores support local Arizona vendors.

I have purchased plants from exotic retailers over the Internet. Waited almost three months. When I went to repot one tiny plant, discovered it was a cutting, called the seller about it who stated only that they root very quickly. Well, mine didn't, it died and I am out the $20 and he had no remorse, did not offer a replacement or refund. I have also looked for them on Ebay and refuse to pay the excessive shipping charges. It doesn't cost $20 to ship a 16 oz package.

I am not an expert. I only discovered Hoya less than a year ago. There is only one garden center here that I know about that carries them and the ones that aren't Hoya Carnosa are often mis-labeled. So I am always excited to find a treasure like this - especially in unexpected places.

Cindy,

First let me say "what a BEAUTIFUL plant!".
I just found a mottled leaf Lacunosa at our Lowe's which is fairly new in the market. Not sure why it was there, had NEVER seen one in Maine before! I purchased the plant to send to another Dave's member who loves hoyas and yes, indeed, it was a mottled leaf Lacunosa.
SOMETIMES these things just show up out of no where for no apparent reason and I consider a gift from God :)
I found a BEAUTIFUL pot of Curtisii in HD in New Hampshire and had never seen one of those before either.
Regardless of how much you spent, where you found it etc. if you love it that's all that really matters :)
Not telling you what to do but I think I saw in the crevices some little white specs. Hoyas can be mealy magnets and you may want to spray the white specs with some alcohol before they get out hand.
I hope you enjoy your new hoya and would LOVE to see pictures when it blooms for you.
Our HD NEVER has hoyas and once in a while I will see them at Lowe's. After seeing your beautiful picture though guess where I'm heading tonight? *lol*

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Great Falls, MT(Zone 4a)

Ohhh Cindy, please don't regret posting this thread!! I am sure that there is NOT ONE person on this forum who would NOT have bought that hoya!! (in fact I bet more than one made a quick trip to their Home Depot or Lowes) It is a super deal, and I think that congratulations are well in order. I bought my H. macgillivrayii 2 years ago at a small nursery, and it looked exactly like yours, same pole and everything!! In fact, I bought the 2 that they had, and paid $25.00 each for them!!

I think that what is being expressed is disbelief and amazement that you found such wonderful plants at Home Depot! I certainly don't think anyone is actually saying that they don't believe you. I didn't think that your hoya was an exotic angel hoya, as their pots are very distinctive, and if you look closely, they have an angel embossed in the plastic.

Please don't retreat to lurkdom......it is much more fun to post! :) (especially for a blabber like me)

Hugs,
Sara

There ARE jerks on ebay...and most of us know who they are and avoid them. But there are wonderful sellers too!!! Buying a treasure like you did at a BBstore is a thrill all of us envy and wish we could do it!!!

I don't think there isn't one of us who doesn't have an opinion about just about everything....and this forum is a friendly place to express them. Often what is said is not interpreted the way it was meant...so I hope NO ONE here gets offended. I am all for anyone buying good quality plants wherever they can find them!!! Hoyas Rule!!

Colts Neck, NJ(Zone 7a)

Cindy, add me to the list of people who think you found a fantastic bargain! I recently purchased ("won") on ebay the identical plant as you have there, except I spent about $50 including the shipping. I dont begrudge a cent of it, but I did get a big laugh when I saw what you had paid for yours.

Hopefully down the line we can all post pics of our flowers.

Louise

Tempe, AZ(Zone 9a)

Thanks so much for all the helpful information. I can't wait for it to bloom, the pictures I've seen are gorgeous

Medford, NJ

I would have bought the plant as well - however, I could go to every Home Depot in New Jersey. Pennsylvania and Delaware and find the same exact plants in the same exact pots from the same exact growers. My point was that if the Big Box stores eventually take over, the quality could suffer. Maybe I should just stick to oohing and ahhing and saying things along the lines of "nice plant" and keep my mouth shut. I forget sometimes that people post on here for different reasons, and not necessarily everyone wants to hear my opinion!

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Jen...no worries. At least on this forum we have the freedom to express our opinions freely...

I for one meant nothing untowards anyone...

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

Oh me neither....I just wanted to tell her about the possible mealies as soon as possible

;)

Great Falls, MT(Zone 4a)

You know Cindy, I looked at Gabbi's picture of the macgillivrayii that she bought from Awanda, and they could be pictures of the same plant. Awanda lives in AZ, maybe she has also seen these hoyas.......

Well, regardless, you got a super deal!

Cindy, it looks like a great plant, good score!
I'm not sure what this endless over-concern about what hoyas Home Depot or Lowes is carrying is all about. You can order any hoya you want from any of a number of vendors online.
When anyone finds a less common plant, especially a large one, in a common venue they should happily buy them and be grateful for the experience. I know that I am- when I found a very large and well-grown compacta for sell recently at a local nursery, I was really excited, and bought it at once, without demanding a pedigree.
These are great plants, but they are just plants, and anyone can grow them and sell them. They aren't the exclusive domain of a privileged few.

p.s. Cindy, don't be to certain as to what plant you have there until it blooms. I can't tell the difference between macgillivrayi, onychoides, or archboldiana unless there are flowers, though mac is a good guess. Whichever, it is a lovely plant.

Tempe, AZ(Zone 9a)

Thank you Mark, I agree. I love to find them in unlikely places. I've even found a Compacta and a big beautiful pink Hoya Carnosa at a Cactus nursery in Tucson.

I'll wait for the blooms with fingers crossed that this is actually the Macgillivrayi because they're beautiful. That is always the greatest reward to growing Hoya successfully.

Personally, I'm grateful to have the time to spend going over the wonderful inventory of plants at the BB stores while my husband's shopping for hardware.

Was just reading old posts....I would have said, what a great score and at a fantastic price!!!!

S

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

Oh, yeah!
And to add to the 'amazement' factor.....remember not too very long ago when we were all amazed that HD/Lowe's etc...were selling Lacunosa, Curtisii, Kentiana, Linearis.....etc...?

Cindy...has your plant bloomed yet?

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

It is a marvelous find!!! And I second Nan's question...has it bloomed? If it is macgillivrayi, probably not.... grow it dryish in the winter...no dry/dry/dry/...but not really wet....macgillivraryi's are lie archboldiana and like to rest.....

GREAT find!!!!

Carol

Silex, MO(Zone 5b)

That's awesome Cindy- I would have snatched that up in a heartbeat!! And lol- I always leave my husband in the trim section and sneak away to the gardening section when we go to Lowe's or HD- he doesn't even try to argue with me anymore- he just gives me a time limit lol. ;)

Tempe, AZ(Zone 9a)

Here, here! Thank you. I am still loving it - but it hasn't bloomed yet. Thank you Carol for the great advice. I was sure to overdo it as I usually equate love of plants with more water. I will be sure to post pictures of the blooms when they come.

Back to the Big Box issue, I lurk around all of them and have found only a couple of them bring out the exotics (un-named, of course). I've got my lurkdom down to a science - visiting at least once a week. I recently found a couple of Kerrii's and a Polyneura and a Bella, (she says patting herself on the back)

Thanks for the accolades

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

I share Mark's confusion with macs, archies and onychies! I have 6 different macs from DL and all of their leaves are a tiny bit different. Onchies seem to have a different new leaf....but then I have Ed's cross between onychie and archie and until they bloom...I just smile at them an wonder (?).

Sara...I thought Cindy's plant looks like the ones Awanda was selling too....I wonder if Awanda is selling to the big box stores?

Carol
