I got the prettiest color of nasturtium seeds, they are called Cherry Rose Jewell. I'll be darned if I can figure out how to harvest there seeds. I haven't been dead heading at all, and I haven't seen a single seed. Does anybody know anything about harvesting seeds from nasturtium, because I can't figure out where in the heck they are.
Thanks in advance for any information.
Tami
Harvesting Nasturtium Seeds
They're pretty big, you can't miss them- about 1/4 to 1/2", pale in color but color does vary, somewhat roundish, bumpy surface. Sometimes plants will not start producing seeds until they are "mature" enough.
Am jealous you're up there with blooming nasturtiums in the middle of summer :(
Jealous of me ? You all get to grow flowers year round. Couldn't you grow these in the winter, seems like your temps would be just right. Thanks for the info on the seeds, I'm gonna keep looking for them. LOL I know there to big to miss, I even have my bifocals on so I know I can't miss them :)
LOL You'll see them :)
Yeah, we can grow them in winter. Last winter was not a good one though, snapped everyone's young nasturtiums :( This year I want tons!
azreno - Well, if I get some seeds I will send you some. I will take a photo for you when and if it ever quits raining... I'm not complaining mind you :) They go from a dark pink to a lighter pink and it looks really pretty all mixed together on the plant. The leaves are huge on this one.
Oh, that's the sweetest offer! I do have seeds for fall though so you save yours or share with another. Thank you though!
Tami - I grew some Jeweled Mix Nasturtiums from seeds a year ago and they didn't put out seeds until this year. Now some of my plants have died (from the heat). I tried to grow Cherry Rose from commercial seeds and had no luck. Glad to hear yours germinated and are lovely! I'd love to see a photo of yours! :-)
Hi Becky,
I'll snap a photo for you if it ever stops raining, I am sure they are pounded to the ground. So do they bloom year round for you? Once it freezes the plants are gone, so I hope that they hurry up and set some seeds. I'm sorry you had no luck with the seeds, they really are beautiful, when I was out and about Sunday I picked up a couple more seed packs for next year just in case I don't get any seeds from the plant. I will post a picture when I can get out and snap it.
Becky, I will have to wait a bit on the picture, are hail and rain storms are really doing a number on the flowers. I hope it perks back up.
gardengus, thanks so much for the photo. And nope I do not see anything like that on my plants. Darn yours is setting seeds, not a bad thing for you, but darn I wonder if I am even going to get any. Well there's still a good month or two depending on mother nature, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
Thanks Tami
tami- once they are mature, they fall off, and I usually go looking for them like Easter Eggs under the plant. They turn tannish in color, and look like little grenades. Actually, 4:00 seeds look like grenades...these just look like tiny shriveled up peach pits.
