So our photographer has a sister who raises chickens! She is going to drive out here with a couple of hens that are about 6 months old. They have RIR...California Whites, and Red and Black Sexlinks. Ryan will only let me get 5 more hens...since we still have Orange. What should I get? Do Red and Black Sexlinks lay good eggs? Or should I just get all RIR's?
Who knows?
New hens...black or red sexlinks
Red sexlinks have good eggs, but are aggressive, mean. I don't know enough about the black sexlinks to give you advice on them. We raise Comets (they are a variation of a red sexlink) and have been good. I th ink RIR are your best bet.
Awesome! Thank you.
Knowing your propensity for naming based on color, you better get a (RI) red, a white and a black. LOL Or will you call them red 1, red 2, red 3, etc??
Congrats on the chickens!!
Hahaha...THANKS! Acutally...our black sexlink that was eaten...we called her Sexy. I thought it was a cute name! I let Ryan name our new duckling, and said anything but Quackers (seriously...I think he is 5 years old sometimes). I think he picked Apollo. I rolled my eyes as he though naming this (what will be a pretty small duck) something tough...might give it a better chance of living if it ever faces death like our last duck!
Well my kids have had some fun naming ours!
I think the most funny is my 3 year old that claimed the 2 red birds. As the other kids named their chickens, she was sort of sad and just called them her red birds. So I told her they looked like pennies to me and maybe she could call one Penny and one Copper and I gave her some more choices. She ended up calling them Penny One and Two Penny. LOL She thinks she can tell them apart but I'm clueless. The red birds are hers. :)
One of my 5 year olds birds, really likes to peck at your feet. It goes after your toenails, toe rings, designs on your shoes, scabs, moles, anything that is not plain old skin! She decided to name it King Pecker. After the initial shock and laughter, I told her that was not a good name for a girl. Ahem....I'm not sure of it's new name but I hope it sounds better in front of visitors!
King Pecker!?! Hahaha...that is wonderful! When I was teasing Ryan about naming this duckling something silly I said, 'Why dont we just call it dishwasher!' Then he thought it was a great idea. I should kept my mouth shut i guess...but then I started calling it DW...hopefully he will come up with a more appropriate name for him.
We also have a foal on the way...ANY day now...cant come up with any good name idea. Parents and Raven and Rusty, and the brother is Peekho. I thought something with a P...but not sure what. I am bad at naming things...I can tell you that much!
Thank goodness I dont have any real children.
Yeah, that is something I'd rather not have my 7 year old run around the yard yelling! LOL
Dishwasher is hysterical! You know DW is netlingo for Dear Wife (or darn wife depending on the day!)?? Don't tell Ryan that! At least he left Donald and Daisy out of the considerations....I think someone named their duck Beacker but for the life of me, I can't think who! I think their is a cartoon duck named Webby?
Congrats on the soon to be foal! My 11 year old would LOVE to have a horse but that won't be in the picture for sometime!
I did a good job giving my kids names that everyone pronounces and spells wrong. ;)
I named one of my geese Pate' (is that how its spelled?)
as in goose liver
and I had a very small bantam I called Mcnugget......
LOL CC! You are so bad!
Hubby wanted to name our rabbits extra crispy and kentucky fried. He'd no sooner eat them than I would!
Hey, I named my marans Marshall (roo) MaryAnn, Marge, Markie, Marcella, Marcia and Marcy, everyone is named from the first three letters of their breed, a MARan and after TV characters, Maryann, Gilligans Island, Markie Post, from Night Court and Something about Mary * (funny), Marcia Brady say no more, Marcy from Married with Children, the neighbor and Marcella a woman I worked with years ago and Marshall because he will be the biggest male Chicken.
When I was a kid we used to name our pigs after pork, ham, porkchops, bacon, spareribs, hocks, rinds, feet etc. I don't name my turkeys though, I am having a hard time eating meat knowing that I am raising it. Though the smell of a cooking turkey might change my mind!
ITs funny how people differ so naming a pet (I named my "known" red silkie roo Red!!! and my silver sebright that has more white than the others Blondie!! I am so original!) yet my husband named his last dog after his GRANDFATHER and wanted to name our dog after HIM (my HUSBAND) No way was I having Dougie Jr running around, the neighbors would have thought I was a wife always yelling his name.
Lora- That is SO funny. I have never heard of anyone wanting to name a dog after themselves! We did find out today that our little ducky thinks I am mom. When he is out of his heat box he goes nuts if I walk away from him. Then he comes running! RUNNING after me! As soon as I stop he climbs up onto my feet, and lays down.
Starting to feel bad for my house since all of my attention has been given to our chicken(s) and duck!
I had a friend who raised 6 broilers one year. He named them: Kentucky, Fried, Chicken, Finger, Lickin', and Good. Seriously...I thought it was a joke until his 5 year old was caught carrying one around and said, 'Fried wanted to come say hello."!
