Rooster with Coccidiosis

Lapeer, MI

Hi all, my roo Rafael has been sleeping a lot. Has not been eating or drinking. I have to give it Terramycin by an eyedropper. It doesn't seem to help it at all.

I gave it a bath, because I noticed it had lots of parasites on it, everywhere. There still on him but, dead. Some are still alive! I used cat shampoo for mites and ticks. I used a blow drier to dry it off. But it's still not dry, after 10 mins. of blow drying and 1 hr. of being wrapped in a towel. So I thought to put a heater next to it. It seems to be trembling every 5 seconds. I don't if it's scared or cold.

It has watery poop (no blood). It's been like this for about roughly 1-2 weeks.

I'm going to try to give it honey to wake it up a little. It's been sleeping constantly. And when I make loud noise it doesn't bother to wake up. Only when I pick it up it wakes up.

Will water be enough or do I have to force it to eat. It doesn't want to even open its beak!I called my local TSC, they don't have practically anything. I don't even have a vet that's close to me.

PLEASE HELP!!! Any Advice.

Parasites will literally suck the life out of an animal or even a person. That probably explains why he's been so bad off for a while. The best you can do, in my opinion, is keep giving it electrolytes. A little sugar in the water probably won't hurt. I would keep giving it the terramycin but if you are trying to treat cocci I don't believe that will help. I think Albon is recommended for cocci.......I am at work so I don't have my notes to look at to verify, sorry.

Force feeding birds is tricky they can inhale into their lungs easily. If he is that weak maybe make a soupy mash and use a syringe (no needle)and try to get him to swallow it on his own when you offer it in his beak. Pet shops sell a powder that is used to make a handfeeding formula for parrots etc... you might try that if you can get him to eat anything out of a syringe. Just a thought.

I would dust with DE, if it were me, my coop/pen etc.... if one is infested I'm sure others are as well.

Good luck

Eric, Cocci is a disease of young chickens....how old is your roo? You can dust the bird itself with the DE, it will help a lot. Birds as a rule don't like to be wet and they can get pneumonia and die. That's why they take "dust baths".

Sorry.

Well I got them at TSC, April, 2005. About 2 yrs. and three months. I know it's not young but it has all the symptoms of cocci. I put it in my garage on a chair, on a towel, by a heater (off now).

I really couldn't find anything on chicken pneumonia. What are its symptoms?

They are listless, don't eat, and will just do runny poop. They just kinda lay there and they look like they are dying. Cocci usually does have blood in the stools.

Yeah see, if I clap loud it doesn't bother to look. But if I touch it, it opens its eyes, for 2 secs. I keep it on a towel, so I don't know if it has the runs, but I can see its droppings. their like grass green and some white. While others are just plain white.

This morning I gave it 1 tsp of electrolytes and 1/2 tsp of terramycin (antibiotic). Do electrolytes count as a feed replacement. It doesn't want to eat. I give it the liquids through an eye dropper.

No electrolytes are to keep it from dehydrating and try to give it energy, it is not considered a feed replacement.

Oh okay, so then how would I give it its feed. In the back of the bag of electrolytes it says I has vitamins and stuff like that.

I'd stop the terrimycin
Personally I think its useless
its been used so much on poultry that I swear I think they've built an imunity to it like humans do to over used antibiotics

if you find any probiotics give it that

Well I did stop giving it Terramycin. I started giving it more of the electrolytes with some food mixed in, in a tiny baby bottle (used for puppies and kittens).

I just remembered giving my egg layers the left over Terramycin from Rafael. I read that you shouldn't eat them. Lets say if I did eat one, would it really hurt me??? We really haven't ate any eggs this week, and I don't know which ones are infected.

I don't think it would hurt you
unless you were allergic to penicillins

and I wouldn't eat any of the new eggs for at least a week after they were last given it

I'd just trash the eggs you have and start over in a week
At like a buck for a dozen is it worth risking your health for 1.00?

Payneville, KY(Zone 7a)

Wow, I sell my eggs for $3 and $3.50 dozen. :) Still not worth the risk.

I get 18 for abot 1.39
No they are not freerange....

but most of my eggs go into the incubator
soon when I shut it down(please be soon)
I wont have to buy for a while
