Look at my terrarium salad bowls!!!!!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Here we have been talking about sources for clear salad bowls............mine just got here from a friend who picked them up at a restaurant supplier in Houston...........they are in Austin, Dallas, etc................www.sabert.com

I picked up a case of 80 oz of 50 and 160 oz of 50 salad bowls..........just perfect for a terrarium and no glass!!!!

those are nice. What's one gonna do with that many of them?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I have waaaaaaay too many African Violets and green plants................they need to be used for something pretty...............3 of my grandchildren are coming this weekend.......and we are going to make terrariums for them to take home.............i can make them and take to the homebound at church...........gifts for friends............

I always have at least one shelf of gro lights progating the small plants that go into a terrarium............some people pick these up at 2 at a time at a particular restaurant supplier..........in their home towns..........

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

That's a good idea,

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

hey gessie...how much were those? those would also be good as clotches....just glue a handle on the top

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I don't know what the word 'clotches' means...........I still don't know the exact price because a friend picked them up for me............but i am thinking that the larger ones with both pieces run about 3.00 each?????.............you can't buy glass for that and , if you do, it sure breaks easily............these are nice and sturdy...................

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

a cloche is an old timey and current thing that creates a greenhouse environment for plants...thus....sort of a terrairum...; they are glass right?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

no, they are clear heavy plastic salad bowls from restaurant suppliers............that is the beauty of them.............sturdy but don't break.............

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Thanks for the dmail Gail...

Are those a bottom and a top together, or do you have two of the same thing placed together by yourself to show how they can be used as terrariums?

I like them... I know you will make good use of them.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I am showing both parts of each size terrarium.................when you buy them each salad bowl actually has a flat top that restaurants use (buy separately) but you wouldn't want a flat top and that is why you put two of the same size one on top of the other.........

(Zone 1)

Hi Gail: Love those salad bowls for terrariums! It should be lots of fun planting those with your grand kids this weekend! I bet they will treasure their little mini gardens they made with their grandmother! I have a question about the salad bowls. Do they lock into place, one on top of the other? Or does one just sit gently on top?

I hope you will get someone to take pic's of you and the grand's making your terrariums! It's so wonderful getting youngsters interested in nature and gardening at a young age! I know you will have a Great time!

Powder Springs, GA(Zone 7b)

You can buy salad bowls and ice buckets at Party City but they are probably twice the price Gessie quoted. It is nice to have friends in the restaurant business.

A cloche can be plastic, glass, polycarbonate. It provides a mini greenhouse environment mainly for early spring plants and vegetables.

thanks so much, hcmcdole...................I am going to check out this site...............these I have aren't 'perfect' as one just sits on top of the other one..................

***the one on the other site are made of glass and much nicer............I did order some nice ones not of glass, but of plexiglass on www.cedarcreek.com

I don't have a friend in the restaurant business..............I just did my homework on findin g them and found out that no one around here carries them............a friend who does business in Houston offered to pick them up for me...........I just don't know yet what i owe him in dollars and cents..............

Such a neat idea Gail.Should be loads of fun for you and the grandkids..Looking forward to pictures of your finished terrariums : ))

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

I've emailed the company and they are going to put me in contact with a VA distributor... I told them I was interested in a few of the 14" diameter ones.

(Zone 1)

I love cloches .... don't have any tender plants or veggies to use them for, but I just love sitting stuff like that around the garden! Here's an old heavy glass lid from a cheese tray (bought at a thrift store) and I just sat it over a little baby on the plant stand!

Va Rose, there is an online source listed in this thread http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/737770/
you can order as many as you need, no min/max amount to place the order.

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

Nice photo, what's that yellow tray looking thing under one of those AV's?

Is that there to hold the leaves out like that. That plant is so nice looking

(Zone 1)

They have a 160 oz clear plastic disposable bowl for $1.85 each ... that would make a nice terrarium! I just might have to break down and try a couple of these!

Thank you begoniacrazii!

(Zone 1)

Thanks for the compliment Kathy Ann ... that is a leaf support ring for AV's ... hee hee, I am new to these rings and don't think I have it on there correctly! I just bought some a while back to try and need to figure out how to get it on right! That AV is one of my Optimara's with no ID .... I just am in love with the plants that have variegated foliage!

edited to correct spelling!

plantlady...i love your photo...all the presentation is very nice....i love cloches...

(Zone 1)

Thank you Sticks N Stones! I don't know about "presentation" .... they are all just shoved on the plant stands! I really need another stand .... all of my AV's are really too close together on my stands!

Well, this is a very old thread, but here goes. I am not a grower of violets, but my gut tells me they love to be huddled together for moral support! I noticed on your middle shelf an absolutely gorgeous av----red, burgundy, or blood red?? That's new to me. Quite a stunning color. Do you think the av's grow better inside or out of a terrarium?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I think African Violets do better on the shelf under gro lights. However, having said that, I find that the mini or semi-standard seem to do great in a terrarium. The standards and the large just get waay too big in a terrarium and also don't bloom. I like to put one in a terrarium just as it is starting to bloom. This way you get a couple of months of pretty blooms inside the terrarium.

The red you speak of just has to be one called an old timer that gets to be about 12" across called 'Shoshone'. I am busy until after Thanksgiving but if you can't live without one, I grew many babies and would be happy to send you one.

Seattle, WA

Gessie, you are very generous with both your knowledge and your offer of babies. That Shoshone really is gorgeous from any point of view. I don't grow violets myself, but I can surely understand how that little enterprise could crowd you out of your home!!!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

You won't believe this but my last Shoshone was shipped out on Monday in a trade with RainGazer.....................all my shelves are packed right now............meaning I need just one more gro light stand(LOL)

We had a big Corpus Christi Violet show and sale with judges and the whole 9 yards. I sold over 100 plants as did the other ladies.

Now we are frantically working on our big Mother's Day sale so every bud I see I pinch back waiting until 7 weeks before Mother's Day and then just letting them all come into bloom.
