Caesalpinia gilliesii

Raleigh, NC(Zone 7b)

These are the first blooms for me of this bush that I planted this year. I just love this plant-from the fine leaves to the blooms. It is hardy here, I have a friend with a large bush in his yard, but I thought I would show it to everyone in case some have not seen it, or know that they can have it in their yard too!

anyone else have some cool, unusual bushes/plants that are hardy in this area to show us?

another one that I just learned is hardy here is Erythrina crista-galli. I have a big plant that I am definititely putting in the ground soon-one less plant to haul inside over the winter! I love the blooms on this one.

I like that first one. Might put that on my maybe list for next year. What I read said it was evergreen in warm cilmates. Wonder if it would be evergreen around where I am?

Raleigh, NC(Zone 7b)

I don't know if it would stay evergreen in your zone-I would think so given that it is hardy here and you are so much warmer in the winter, but I had both this and pulcherma in pots in the grhouse over the winter and they both wanted to go dormant. They never lost all their leaves, but they sure seemed like they wanted to. But I would give it a try-its a beautiful bush.

Piedmont, SC(Zone 7b)

The second one is really pretty but the first is BEAUTIFUL! What is the name of it? I would love to have one.

Raleigh, NC

TigerLily--where did you get the Caesalpinia? Anywhere local? Very, very pretty foliage, and the flower is quite lovely...

Raleigh, NC(Zone 7b)

Yotedog-I got it from an ebay grower-there are several growers on there that I have had great luck with-actually all that I have bought from. It was my second attempt at getting one. The first one that I bought last year was sold as a gilliesii but was really a pulcherima-of which i still have but not sure if it is hardy here. The foliage is much finer on the gilliesii, and I think the bloom is prettier too.

Smokey-the name is in the title to the thread!! lol caesalpinia gillisii it is beautiful isn't it?

It is commonly called the desert bird of paradise. They grow like crazy here in Las Vegas and some have deep orange blooms. They are evergreens here in zone 8b. We had a bad freeze here towards the the end of March and most of them that I see in the neighborhood and on my way to work did well if they were already well established. A house around the corner from here had just planted one in the early fall and it didn't make it.

The grow like weeds from seed here so that may be an option if you want to try that route.....

hickory, NC(Zone 7a)

here is mine,i have had it for about 4-5 years now and i love it,just want to prune it back because it is getting to big where i put it and would love to move it it have a few seed pods on mine but not sure when the seeds will be ready, can anyone help me on this?
tigerlily123
i would love some of the seeds to the red one if possable? or a seedling? do you know if the red one is hardy for me? plmk and thxs for shareing
ohhhhh BTW mine looses all its leaves in the winter but then it comes back from the stems, not the ground,so i know it lives in zone 7a-7b im on the line of them 2 thxs

Vegas,NV Filbert, SC(Zone 7b)

I don't have one in my yard but I will stop and see if any of the ones on my way to work have seed pods.

I stopped at this one as we came back from the store.

moretz-are you talking about the erythrina when you say the red one?

hickory, NC(Zone 7a)

tiger
yes i am lol thxs
sorry i didnt specify

Raleigh, NC(Zone 7b)

lol I thought that you were, but figured I would make sure...
I have not been able to take cuttings successfully with this plant. Maybe I should try now, while it is hot. I do know that erythrinas germinate easily and grow fast, so that might be your best bet. I would check out ebay and see what they have in terms of seedings or seeds. I will try again witht the cuttings also-but if you want one in your lifetime-I would do ebay!! lol
As for hardiness-I need to get mine in the ground so it gets established for the winter and then see if/how it comes back in the spring. There was a thread in plant ID where all these people in zone 7b/8a said that it was hardy for them so that was promising....good enough for me to stick it in the ground. There are other erythrinas that are hardy here-

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

I have tried to root a E. bidwillii dozens of times - all unsuccessful attempts. Right now I am trying to air layer a branch but it has been 6 months now and although the branch is still living and healthy, no roots have formed at all.

Is E. integerrima hardy in NC? They do grow easily from seeds and mine bloom forever which the hummingbirds love.

Raleigh, NC(Zone 7b)

Has anyone tried the cuttings in water? I usually prefer constantly moist soil to start my cuttings, but I had some luck with clerodendrum thomsoniae in water. I also started some in soil, and those roots were better by far-but still-maybe I should try that way with this erythrina.

Ardesia-I have never heard of that erythrina and couldn't find it in the plant files, but it sounds interesting.

Piedmont, SC(Zone 7b)

Thanks Carat, I was looking for the common name. I am going to e-bay and find me one. I just love it. It is so different.

Vegas,NV Filbert, SC(Zone 7b)

Moretz, sorry about the confusion......

You are welcome Smokey_SC. If you can't find one I can try and find one for you here and send it to you.

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

Almost ordered one last night from Eldon Accessories (in garden watchdog), they were a good price, just wasn't sure how well established they'd get this time of year around here.

Raleigh, NC(Zone 7b)

eldons accessories is a great place to get plants-I think if you get it right now and get it planted with some fert and water on it thru the rest of the summer, it should be ok-and really mulch it heavy over the winter-that or grow it out until next spring.

hickory, NC(Zone 7a)

Tropicanna
how are your plants doing? i hope fine.mine are doing great and thxs so much
when will you be coming up here lol? this fall ? heheehe
i had a blast the other day and i hope you did too thxs again for all the babies you gave me

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

Hey moretz! I'm doing well, should have been out right now but the person I was going to see had some problems...lol.

I'm so glad you enjoyed yourself, I know I'm a bit wild and hyper, and talk fast. I wasn't sure what you'd think, but then you invited me to your place so you must not have been too scared...lol! Everything is looking great including the cuttings--haven't picked my favorite, yet! I'd like to come up this summer when I can, maybe August sometime...I'd say this weekend but I've obligated myself to some trades ;) My dd had a great time with yours by the way...and where was my brain...the camera! lol

hickory, NC(Zone 7a)

lol i didnt care for the camera lol
yes b said she had a ball as well
well i will be here any time you want to come up
im trying to get some of my beds cleaned up lol but i got a splinter in one and i cant pull any more until i get it out it is driving me crazy lol
cant wait for you to come

Vegas,NV Filbert, SC(Zone 7b)

Tropicanna are you planning on purchasing a desert bird of paradise or the Erythrina crista-galli. Either way you could get it now and keep it in a container until you find where it will be happiest. Then over winter it in a garage until next spring. Just a thought.

Also are you a native to the south or a happy transplant? I haven't met many fast talking southerns and I notice that I really have to pay attention and slow down my speech so people can understand what I am saying.

hickory, NC(Zone 7a)

carat
she can talk like you wouldnt believe lol
just kidding tropicanna
i had so much fun we need to get all the people that livbe close to us to get togetther it would be a blast

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

I decided to wait until the spring, by then I should have another bed ready and will constantly rearrange everything I'm sure. I figured I have enough to play musical plants with for now.

And girl, you better beleive I'm native North Carolinian..lol! moretz, you crack me up. I grew up at the beach (Atlantic Beach) so we're a little different than most ;)

I do think another Roundup is a good idea....hint...hint

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Tigerlily, I am sorry, I was having one of those DUH moments. I just realized I am mixing up my species. I only have the bidwillii and herbacea.

hickory, NC(Zone 7a)

lol its your turn to do one tropicanna i already did one,lol but i will help youwith one if you like?

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

dmailing you moretz

Vegas,NV Filbert, SC(Zone 7b)

OH that sounds like fun. I hope and pray that I am actually living in the Carolinas full time before the next round up. Trying to sell this house is driving me insane....

Wow Trop, I am impressed a fast talking southerner. I get people telling me _repeat that please and preferably at a speed of less then 80 mph_. West coast people seem to talk alot faster in my experience.

OH, which plant were you looking to get?

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

CARAT, I do hope you are able to move back closer soon, although I've never been to Vegas, and pretty sure I could have some fun there. One of my friends moved to San Francisco for awhile and when he'd visit we got a kick out of how fast he talked. Now that he's back, he's slowed back down. And I do talk faster than most folks around here, but it's probably more like I talk a lot. Hyper

Were you asking me which plant I was looking to get? Where? All of them is the answer...lol

Really though, it was nice meeting you in Asheville and it would be cool to see you again soon :)

Vegas,NV Filbert, SC(Zone 7b)

I enjoyed meeting you also Trop. I am quite hyper also or as my DH calls me ADHD, so the speed speech is just an over flow of my brain going to fast. I have such a hard time turning it off at night so I can sleep also.

You had mentioned you almost ordered a plant through Eden. I was curious as to which plant you were looking at getting.

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

Haha, I can't sleep either, funny.

I was looking at erythrina, plus they had vanilla orchid and a "blue" hibiscus. It's the first time I ordered from them but didn't get the erythrina.
