episcia
Hi Moretz,
I am from the Hickory area. Where did you get your episcia? Am I crazy, or is there no pic? :)
Sandi
I love episcias! They are most temperamental about the temperature! They don't like it much below the upper 60's, and will give it up altogether with long periods in the 50's or lower. They can take bright light and up to a few hours of sun (morning is best), and yes, they do like it humid. Some varieties (the pale ones and the variegated ones) need more humidity than some of the older or darker leafed varieties. I have a variegated ('Ember Lace') that was not happy until I put it in a terrarium... and my older 'Kee-wee' lives in a clay pot, gets 4-5 hours of sun a day, neglected in the water department occasionally, and it's been blooming for two months non-stop now (once everyone told me to remove the stolons).
I have 9 different named varieties, and some mixed seedlings that are too young to ID yet. I hope to add to my collection eventually by possibly doing some trades for different varieties with other growers here.
Enjoy your new plant, and good luck!
Karen
I have decided that I no longer am in love with them..........................am getting ready to use over the next couple of months all of them in terrariums.....................
Hi Moretz: I'm new to Episcia's too. I have a couple of small ones I've gotten from other DG'ers in trade and I am trying to learn about them so I can keep them alive. I saw where MsC said they like more of everything, light, water and humidity! I might just have to move mine out to my back deck to see how they do ..... it's very bright and VERY humid out there!
Hope you will post a photo of your new baby!
Lin,
They do like higher light but they just DO NOT want any full sun, far as I know...if you put them out they should do well in your area because of the humidity & temps.
They like to be moist, lightly fertilized all the time and have to have warmth. They don't like to be water logged because they will then rot..I know I already did that to one by accident...lol
I believe of all the gessies they would be the ones to grow out doors on a covered patio with some light, they don't mind the heat at all.
MsC
Thanks MsC! I am going to be out of town for 8 or 9 days beginning this coming Sunday. I am leaving mine inside for the time being, but when I get back from visiting my Lil' Sis I am gonna move mine out to my deck! I moved the Alsobia Cygnet out there and it began blooming right away .... I also have a hanging basket of Alsobia Dianthiflora that I put out there a few days ago and I hope it does well too! I am watering everything inside and out before I leave and hopefully all will be okay while I'm away. Hubby told me to leave a list of "some" things I want him to water .... he says he doesn't have time to water everything! I told him if we don't have rain he can use the hose and water everything on the pool deck and I will probably try to get him to water everything under the covered deck also. I might find some wilted and pitiful stuff when I return, but it's happened before and everything always seems to recover! My plant stands will not have the lights on while I'm away, so AV's will be a bit dark .... although, I think I might just go buy timers for them! I know hubby wouldn't remember to turn them on in the morning before he goes to work!
Thanks for all your great advice .... I really appreciate all the help I get from everyone on this forum!
Lin

is your sis into flowers/plants like you are?
My sister loves plants and flowers but her life is so busy with other things that she has a gardener do all of her landscaping. Whenever I'm there visiting she usually has a few containers she wants me to help with replanting! She mentioned this to me on the phone again the other day .... so I will get to "play in the dirt" a bit while I'm there! She has an Awesome home that is up for sale right now ... she's downsizing ... her only child, a daughter is a Jr. in college and the house is huge ...5 bedrooms, 4 master bathrooms and 2 half baths! Three fireplaces in the house too! She also has a basement that is fully furnished and the size of my house .... really, my entire house would fit in her basement! The one room I would truly miss if I were her is her "Sun Room" .... a huge room, with two sets of french doors off the family room and another set of french doors off the informal dining room - windows all the way around and a glass ceiling ... really pretty overlooking her large backyard and the preserve and woods behind her! She doesn't have many plants in there because she is really busy with church stuff and also plays tennis every day! I would have plants everywhere and hanging from the rafters if I had a room that size .... I wish I had a photo to post, it is the perfect "Garden" room!
hee hee .... wish I could come to N.C. in the fall ... I love it up there at that time of year! LOL about bringing lots of money! I will be going to one of my favorite nurseries near my sister and always buy garden gadgets to mail home .... now that I've learned to mail plants I might be shipping a couple of green things back home too!
what do they have there hehehe things i cant get? sounds like fun wish you could make it here well maybe next time
WOW my house isent that big,and kinda glad it isent because i couldnt keep it clean lol
well have fun and good luck finding you new babies
Moretz............you are too nice..............for now I am too busy but I am going to put this note in my drafts.............I will be happy to trade you if you divide yours.........all I need is just a little bit.................
ok np here just lmk when youre ready and what you have for trade and thxs
Oh Lin!!! Please, please, please... if your sister wouldn't mind... would you please take a picture of her sunroom when you visit, and then post it here for all of us to see??? It sounds like a heavenly room to me, and I would just love to see it.
VA_Wild_Rose: I thought I had a photo of her sunroom but have searched my files and can't find it .... I will definitely be taking pictures while I'm up there and will take one of the sun room for all to see! I just love it and could sit out there for hours on end, reading or just gazing out the windows at the trees!
If I ever have my own house (one day...) it MUST have a sunroom/atrium/greenhouse/conservatory attached to it! It will be the one thing that probably keeps me from buying the otherwise perfect home! LOL!
