I got my first shipment of deer scram to try on the rabbits (since mine have grown accustomed to hot pepper wax). So, I planted replacements of the rabbits last feast along with a few others, and generously applied the Deer Scram. I read the insert to make sure it was not going to poison my dogs and it says it will put the "Fear of death" in to any deer or rabbit that comes around. Not being too interested in anything beyond that, and the safety of my dogs, I went for it (it does offer a 100% guarantee).
So, to get to the point, I took my dog out for a potty break about 11 pm last night, and by the light of my poorly lit solar garden lights, I can see one of my new Russian Sage plants dug up and broken all to pieces, along with bits of snapped off Autumn Joy. I was shocked - I thought to myself "what the heck??", not even the largest rabbit in town could have done that (and they have never messed with those two plants in my yard before). Then I started naming off the usual suspects, like Ivey, the pretty little Westie next door who had snuck out of her yard and was racing around my just hours before, and Maizee, the cute little retriever pup that likes to come visit. Never did it cross my mind that my little Boater Dog would do such a thing. Never mind the fact he'd been uncharacteristically whining and scratching to get out all afternoon (coincidentally after I spread the Deer Scram). Well, I finally pieced it all together when I took him out for his morning stroll, and he couldn't wait to get back to the yard - and head right to the exact plants that I put the Deer Scram around. Off he goes to those plants and starts digging and rolling around to his hearts delight!
I was able to salvage the Russian Sage, and I put the Autumn Joy in water to root so I can replant it in a few weeks. I thought about scraping off the remaining Deer Scram but I decided to leave it to see if it works on the rabbits. For now all I can tell you is it doesn't put the fear of death into a Rat Terrier!
