Hello,
I am new to Begoias, and foudn some "finds" at Lowe's! LOL
I got the first Begonia in the white basket (Not sure what kind it is!) for $2, AFTER the guy broke off the only stoke of Red Tipped White Flower in the basket. Which is why my daughter picked it!! They grow in a cluster on their own flower steam, as best s I can descrip it! LOL Wish I could get another one some where to replace it!!
I tried to root the two pieces that where long enough but I don't thin they are going to make it!
And the second one has thre different ones in it as well. It also was $2-3 Dollars and has 2 red flowers and 1 white one. I think 1 red one and the white one are them same kind, but the other red one looks more like a poppy flower bloom! LOL I think these are Reiger Begonias.
1.) could some one I.D. these two types of Begonias?
2.) Could some one please tell me where I might be able to get a Red Tipped White Flower like the ones in the white basket to replace the one we lost?
Help With Begoias!!!!
So know one out there knows what type of Begonias these are? HUUUMMM
Those are tuberous beognias (camellia or rose like blooms). These will go dormant in winter and some special care is required to winter them over (check the sticky link for care).
Check eBay, Antonelli's begonias, Jackson & Perkins, Thompson & Morgan, Park Seed, White Flower Farm (expensive Blackmore and Langdon begonias are sold here), Dutch Gardens, several catalogs that deal in bulbs will have them for sale in spring, and of course local nurseries.
Well I looked up camellia Begonias and the leaves of that plant dont' look right at all.
The pot with the white Begonia in it, its flowers get so big they point down and hang.
The other pots flowers grow in clusters, on there own branches. Not of the stems the leaves are on.
Any other guesses?
Also I would rather bring these inside and have them as house plants in the winter.
Whatever you think!
I grew the pink tuberous begonia or very similar one last year. I picked it up at Costco around Valentine's day. It makes a nice foliage plant after the blooms are gone. I put mine outside way too early and was surprised how cold tolerant it was. It bloomed lightly throughout the summer, would probably have done better if I fertilized it. I didn't bring it back indoors and it lasted till the first hard frost. You can try bringing it in as a house plant. Mine did well while it was inside and didn't mind the lower humidity. I don't know if it will go dormant. There is a big leaf variation among begonias. The exact name you'll probably not be able to find out.
That is them, Reiger and Tuberous! Now if I just knew which ones! LOL Maybe I could find the one that broke off!
The one in your first photo with the pink flowers is a Reiger. I believe they are meant to be tossed out after they finish blooming. The second photo is a Tuberous begonia.
