I'm growing lime, valencia orange, meyer lemon, fuyu persimmon, satsuma tangerine, along with a camellia standard (debutante and nuccio's pearl) and an azalea standard. I was inspired by old european traditions of growing citrus in terra cotta and am experimenting to see if I can do it successfully. So far, so good . . . .
Citrus in containers
Very nice, very pretty courtyard too.
I have found to keep them in manageable pots, I have to remove them annually and cut back the root ball. I also keep the tree pruned.
Will look forward to your next photos.
Wow! Interesting podster. Do you have pics? What are your rules about cutting the rootballs? When do you do it? Do they still bear fruit?
Mine are not dwarf and not fruit bearing but grapefruit trees currently 6' tall. The rules are to keep the thorns nipped (they can be wicked ) , pull it out of pot and whack about 1/3rd of the root ball off, remove some surface soil from the remaining rootball and repot. I use a drywall saw which is pretty crude but effective. Started pruning the top as they are unmanageable in size. I'll see if I can locate a photo... BTW, I cut them back in springtime. They require less water that way.
