I have also seen a hummer that looks just like a ruby-throat or a black-chinned except that its throat is yellow instead of black, purple, or red. There was not just one of them, but several. I also had several regular looking black-chins and ruby throated hummers to compare them to, and there was a definite difference in the hummers. I'm thinking of asking the county extension service to come take a look at them, but they haven't shown up at my house yet this year. Here are a few pictures of the hummers that I saw with yellow gorgets.

One more. Also, I've heard and witnessed about how a hummer's gorget looks different at different angles. Well these hummers have yellow gorgets no matter what angle that you look at them from.

Did you check out this listing for your state's hummingbirds?

Maybe a rufous or a broadtailed? Your states certainly are home to a number of different varieties!

I don't think its a rufous. The female rufous does have a small patch of yellow but not like these. I think this is a female rufous or an immature male rufous. It also has a small patch of yellow on its neck, but its different. Here's a pic.

Tabasco.... Ye s, I did thank you, but I only got such a quick glimpse of the bright yellow that I not sure what the rest of it looked like.

I sure wish I could get off some pic s of these guys. I'm lucky I haven't broken my neck or ankles from tripping over stuf f trying to photograph them. Then when i look at the shots, I got fett, twigs, trees , dirt , leaves anythign but the bird. LOL

I trie d to get a close r look at them today, but they won't hodl stil long enough. Al I can really tell is oen has a red band aroudn his neck and the other one has like white instead of red.

I moved some of my hummer feeding plants further away from the feeder so maybe now they won't fight as much til I can get to store to get more .

Ella - Whatever they are, they sure are beautiful! That's neat that you get more than just Ruby-throats! I think we do get Rufus in Florida, but more rare.

Perhaps the Callipoe hummer ~ it is almost a yellowish metallic green and can be found in the south... It is smaller and shorter tail feathers...
