great picture Lin...................i have a question for everyone............i have so many good pictures of plants................especially named Avs..........i went to the plant files thinking that i could add pictures of plants...............the names of the avs are just a few so that means you have to add the plant and cultivar..............i don't know the hibridizer, etc............so we have very few av pictures.............and I don't recognize many of the names in the files..........have you all looked???????? Do you all know where the list of av names was taken from???????????????

(Zone 1)

I just added 'Rodeo Country' and uploaded a photo of mine .... also uploaded a photo of my 'Pow Wow'.

Gail, there are many, many AV's listed in PF .... a lot of them have no details or photo's. Rodeo Country just had the name there but no detail's or photo's, so I added what I knew and put a photo in.
When you download a photo to PF it may take a day or two to show up.

Lin, thanks for that site you gave me............if I want to add just a different name of one that I have a good picture of like 'Newtown Shared Venture' that is not there at all............then how do I do it............you showed me how to upload a photo and thanks..........but not i have to learn how to add a new name and picture..............thanks

Gail, when you're on pretty much any page in the PlantFiles, look in the maroon bar across the top. You'll see "Add a Plant". Click that and fill in the info. It asks for Common Name, Family, Genus, Species, and Cultivar Name. You can also fill in the Hybridizer, if you know who they are. I've never added a plant, but it looks pretty easy.

(Zone 1)

Thanks Rain for answering that ... I would have had to go back to read again how to do it! LOL. I forget something five minutes after reading it! :)

Oh Gail ... I do have another one of the mini's you gave me blooming! See how quick I forget?! I knew I saw a couple with buds the other day! This one is the little one with the Pink Fantasy Bloom:

Thumbnail by plantladylin

Lin, I've been thinking of adding a few that I've noticed aren't there, but my ever-present fear of messing something up keeps me from it. LOL I might get brave and try one. :o)

I forgot to say how beautiful all these plants are! Thanks for sharing the pictures. I enjoy seeing them! :o)

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Lin, I am thrilled that you have that fantasy one, too................she looks great and I'm in love with the color..................

I don't know genus, family, etc................why can't I add a new Av by just calling it by the common name African Violet and just go straight to the cultivar which is the name of the av I think......................the worse that can happen is that they don't accept them.........I may try a couple and see what happens................if they go through without knowing the hybridizer which is important, then someone is helping to fill in the blanks for me.???????????????????

Rain................i keep thinking of poor Miss Amethyst in that box (LOL)
edited to ask Rain: do you know on an African violet what the genus, family, etc. is???? I don't....only the cultivar which would be the name...........

This message was edited Jul 20, 2007 11:15 PM

If you do a search for the cultivar name, you should be able to find the hybridizer and such. For AVs, you should use - Family: Gesneriaceae Genus: Saintpaulia and then put in the cultivar name.

I just did one for 'Mac's Carnival Clown'. Not too bad! LOL http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/161147/

I'm sure hoping those arrive tomorrow, Gail! I think they'll be fine if they do. Come Monday, though, I don't know...

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

well, you smarty pants..............you can tell I can't remember one thing i learned in school...............mind is wasting...................let me copy what you just did.............but you can't upload a photo until they approve it????????????

did you upload a photo yet?>

This message was edited Jul 20, 2007 11:22 PM

The plant entry came up immediately. I could upload a photo for it right now, but the photos stay in a queue for a day or two and then get added to the entry. So, that means, you'll see a new plant entry immediately, but it will be a few days before you see your picture.

Abilene, TX

Those are great. How many plants do you have? HA!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I uploaded 2 cultivars and pictures...........I put the picture of the foliage in it..........foliage is more important to me than the blooms...........or just as important.............

avpam, i have no idea...............if I don't quit sticking leaves the house is going to be overflowing.............right now I have 5 big plant stands with gro lights and a small one in the kitchen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(Zone 1)

Hey Gail ... when are you gonna take all the furniture out of your living room and have wall to wall and rows and rows of plant stands? Sounds like you are heading that way .... wanna adopt me?! I would work the night shift ... :)

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

too funny you are!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My oldest child is coming in next weekend with husband and children to help move furniture around............might be able to work in at least one more tall stand (LOL)

(Zone 1)

Can't wait to see your pic's Miss Gail .... Oh what great kids you have to help with re-arranging furniture to enable you to have more room for another plant stand ... maybe two? I'm sure they realize how much fun you are having ... the best therapy in the world in my humble opinion! At least for me, playing with plants has always been very therapeutic, doesn't matter if I'm potting, pinching, cleaning up a dirty mess I've made with soil, perlite etc. or just sitting and gazing at plants .... so very peaceful to me!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I have to post the replacements from Lyndon Lyons...........2 chimeras and an Aeschynanthus lobbianus...............fantastic............I hope I can nurse the other ones back to this stage............'I think I can, I think I can'...........!!!!

Thumbnail by gessiegail
Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I have never ordered from The Velvet Leaf.............look.............you may only get one leaf but you get the history of the av and a marker already marked with the name...............what a deal!!!!!!!!!!!!! no complaints from me...............

Thumbnail by gessiegail
(Zone 1)

Oh Gail ... what's the name of your Chimera? The lady who is Pres. of our local AV Club was wanting to get rid of some duplicate AV's and I bought a little Chimera sucker from her "Peppermint Kathy" - hope I can grow it out.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

well, we will be learning together!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Too tired right now to go look at the names I ordered but will be back after a nap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

leaves to stick, terrariums to make, more wicking and potting..............no wonder I need a nap.............

(Zone 1)

hee hee .... I hear ya! Enjoy your nap. We are heading over to cook out at a friends house. Their son is home on vacation and we haven't seen him in a year and a half. I made Brownies!
