Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Oh WOW !!! She is a beauty.

Did you start her from seed or a cutting?

Manning, SC(Zone 8a)

Just gorgeous Diehrd, aren't you glad you persevered? I can be patient too, but not sure two years' worth!!!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Why don't you post the photos on the brug forum, maybe you can get an ID for that one. It really is awesome.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

i was going to do that, but i think i figured out which one she is. she is from a seed. a lady gave it to me saying it was purple... obviously not, but i think this is better. i am so gld i did'nt give up! thanks all yall for the compliments

i think this is what she is: http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/60040/

Looks more like a Datura than a Brugmansia. Do they cover Datura on the Brug Board?

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Well, DUH, I thought one forum covered both but you are correct, they have seperate forums.

I did think it was a brug at first because the flowers are hanging down but I suspect that is because they are so large and heavy and the plant is still young.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

yeah i wondered about that too, but it has a seedpod that is like a prickly ball. the blooms start out pointing up. they droop when they get large. as datura flowers go, these are real heavy!

Johns Island, SC

I think you're right, Ardesia. Nancy gave me a Datura metel a few years ago---a double yellow that started it's flowers upright, but soon tipped over in Brugmansia form, especially after a rain. Once the flowers "tipped over", they never returned to the typical upward-facing flowers of the species. The flowers on my D.metel 'Alba' on the other hand (a huge white single) never "tip over"---they always stay face up, even after a heavy rain. I think the doubles (and now triples!?!) are just too heavy to remain upright for very long. Anyone out there have double or triple Datura that retains upright flowers?

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

look here. there is one that has'nt fallen over

Think it could be heat-related and not weight-of-flower related? All of the upright flowers seem to be in California. All the droopy ones seem to be in the Southeast...

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

They are just like us, wilting in this heat. LOL

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

lol. but Cali has the heat... just not the humidity. maybe an age thing. that one seems to be old. even this one in Fla isnt as droopy as mine.

diehardsouthrnr, I got your dmail asking me to give my opinion about this, but I'm not really sure why some droop and some don't. My Datura flowers never drooped that I can remember. I grew Daturas for a couple of years but don't anymore except for a Datura wrightii that came up voluntarily this year from some old seed underneath my tangerine tree. I used to grow the double/triple yellow and double/triple purple as annuals in containers, and they were watered daily. I would guess that lack of water would contribute to droopiness, but I really can't say for sure. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

that is ok... we thought it may be an east coast vs west coast thing, and i thought we could get an opinion from the west coast. but since we ARE in a drought, i will heed your advice and start watering more

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

I think plants with large leaves are always thirsty so more water probably would be good but we will never be able to grow some plants they way they do in CA. The climate is just too different. They have those blessedly cool nights out there; it makes all the difference in the world to a plant.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

good point... but at least we can grow tropicals better on the east coast! (as long as it doesn't get too cold)

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

I use my EE's for a water gauge. They're the most thirsty of all my plants. They dry out a little and they start drooping. EE's drooping = turn irragation system on. Your plant may be a combo of being young and not enough water.

Just mt 2 cents.

Hello,
Could you tell me if this is the same things as the pictures that are here? Thanks.
Also I have an Easter Egg plant does anyone know how to tend to this? It has cool eggs and they just keep getting bigger... I want to bring it into the house for winter... Any help? Thanks so much.

that is a datura, as is mine, but it appears to be a different kind. we'll have to see the flower to know or certain. my guess is that it is a white one.
the second plant is also, but i have no guess as to what that one may be. well have to see!

I am apparently still watching this thread! LOL! The first one looks like Datura inoxia or wrightii. The second one has a purple stem and different leaves and is probably Datura stramonium var tatula.

Oh, and we grow tropicals pretty nicely here in Zone 10b!

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

lol
