Gingers for beginners HAYLP!! (grin)

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

potential new ginger person here....i am not seeing a FAQ for gingers so b4 i buy i need to ask a couple of questions...

do all gingers bloom?

are they all the same sun tolerance....or are some more/less tolerant of the sun

there are some gingers at my home depot that are quite lovely....i think that they need to be saved as they are in full texas sun....should they have a different sun
exposure? these are yellow/green striped....just love the looks...but no blooms...

any help would be appreciated:)

All gingers do bloom, though some are fragrant, some are smaller etc-depends on the kind of ginger.

Also depending on the kind of ginger is how much sun they will tolerate. Some need more shade than others, so it is hard to really answer your question without knowing which ginger you want to know about. :)
I think the ginger that you saw is a variegated shell ginger that can tolerate quite a bit of sun, but also can handle some shade, but I am not sure that it is hardy in your area, though it does come back for me in zone 7b. I don't think that it will ever bloom for me as it dies back each winter. Here is the var. shell ginger http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/55244/

wow that sure looks like it....i may have to own it....(like i didn't seem
like i was really pondering it)(vbg)...when considering purchasing plants i start trying to figure out where i will put it and what planter....as oppossed to planting in the ground....i kinda had this earmarked for a shaded area...that gets about 2 hours of early morning sun....do you think that is enuf sun for it? thanks so much:)

Raleigh, NC(Zone 7b)

Yes, I think it will do ok there, but I think it would like a bit more sun-let us know how it does with that much shade!. You can overwinter it by just letting the stems die back over the winter in a room in the house, or keep it watered and put it in a sunny spot in a warm room over the winter (keep it on the dryer side if this option)

i will probably bring it in and just keep it alive....i haven't had good luck with it dying and then reviving it.........thank you so much:)

i bought the yellow and green varegated ginger....a lovely plant ..; i am thinking i am going to need lots of them...; do they need alot of water? i have mine in full sun cause that is where the nursery had theirs....do you think that is alright?

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

Sticks--full sun and tons of water ...they like fert too....that is the thirstiest ginger I've grown so far.

Sticks, if you are getting the ginger bug, try some Dancing Lady gingers. I have pink, mauve, yellow, & now white! I have them in hanging baskets along one side of my carport. Every winter, I bring them in & hang them on my 'tree' that has 3 arms. Water some during the winter & back out they go in the spring.

They are all in bloom now & I am so tickled. I love to see them in the spring when more sprouts than I had last yr, come up! They are so frail & dainty!
:~)

ooooh yeah, globbas are awesome, there's a great source, too: http://www.gingerlandtropicals.com/

wow...you guys are great...yes i definitely am getting the ginger bug; but you guys seem
to be loving them for the flowers....i love them for the foliage!! my variegated one is just a beauty....and the one ginger that started it all i don;t even own...and i don't remember where i saw it but it was a beautiful white and green foliage...i must eventually have that one....but my yeller feller will come in with me to my very crowded sun room this winter.....

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

Globbas are not your normal big ginger. They are small & need Much TLC just to survive. I also have BF ginger, spiral ginger, Emperor(sp too late @ nite), pinecone ginger, Peacock ginger, & several more.
My Emperor was awesome last yr with only one small bloom. It was the foliage! This yr, he is still nice but has 3 6-8" blooms! Even more of a show-off.
But the Dancing Ladies are special! So frail & dainty! Almost fragile!

do you buy your gingers online? i have only found this one ginger locally and otherwise i haven't seen any others

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

okie dokie...trouble here...the leaves are getting brown on the edges of them ....what is that telling me?

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

Is it white/green or yellow/green? Do you have a pic of the plant? If it's alp. zerumbet variegata, my guess would be that it's thirsty, but it could be something else, especially if it's a different plant. Are the leaves curling, too?

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

leaves curl and it is a yellow/green

thank you:)

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

It needs a long drink, I can never seem to water mine enough. It might stay temporarily satisfied, but, it's a heavy drinker.

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

ok...i was trying not to drown it...i 'love' alot of my plants to death....(too much water) ...thank you:)

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

Sorry for the delay, Sticks. Computer died & I am behind on all computer-retated things, work, home, garden, etc.
I have never bought any gingers online. I get them @ swaps, MS, where ever I can find them.
We have Dancing Ladies & several others here @ the Farm where I work.
Last yr, I had a war with moles! They decided they wanted to sample ever tuber, bulb, rhisome that I had planted in the last 3 yrs. I have tried everything to get them out of my yard. This yr things have been ok until about a month ago, when I noticed some of my gingers turning yellow like they did last yr fr being eaten fr below.
Think I will try to drown them! If they just need water, then they will get it but if it is the moles again, I'll drown them!!! Yea, right.
:~)
