Partial Albino Mourning Dove

Ripon, WI(Zone 4a)

Last night this juvenile mourning dove visited our house. It was smaller than it's "normal" siblings. Sorry about the pictures not being very clear - they were taken through the window.

I think it spotted me in this picture. Looks like it's getting a little puffed up at the sight of me. (Note the piece of feeder perch laying on the ground...the result of our lovely squirrels.)

Interesting one!

I have never seen an albino bird defore. Good photo. All my bird shots are through window glass. It sure does mean I do a lot of window cleaning.

That is very interesting goldfinch! I have never seen an albino bird either. Didn't we have a thread here once about albino birds and partial albinos? i seem to remember reading somewhere that they tend to be weaker than the other birds and get picked on too. (sounds just like humans) I don't remember if I read that here or on a web site somewhere.

Thanks. It's my first sighting of an albino bird too. I was pretty excited!

Frank, I think I should clean my windows more often!

Beautiful pic...and just so ya know it's a Diamond Dove.
They are very sweet and shy... someone is probable missing a pet...hope it finds a home soon cause winter temps below 45 will not make him happy...

Their really beautiful!

Oh how sad. I hope it finds a home before winter. I wonder if it would venture into an open bird cage if you put one outside with some food in it?

They are beautiful!

Lottie, I remember seeing some of those in your back yard when you lived down South when DW and I were visiting. I was unable to get a picture as they kept hiding behind your plants.

trois,Yes, but mine were summering outside in cages. The ones that were feeding under the cages were probable the common Mexican ground dove or Rudy ground dove....about the same size but one has light stripes the other has light dots along each wing...
all of them are sweet little birds...

here's a pic

Nope, they must have been runaway Diamond Doves, because they were not in cages. Just visiting your doves, I guess.

MsC, I feel so bad to learn that it might be someone's pet. It's alone - no mate. It gets below zero here often in the winter. Do you think I could try to lure it into a cage? It lets me walk up to within about 2 feet of it before it flies away. And if I was able to catch it, what would I do with it? Any suggestions?

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

You could try to catch it by feeding it for a few days, then try catching it by throwing a towel over it. I doubt you could lure it into a cage but if you have one you could put food & water in it and sprinkle food going to it.
Just to see if you could get it comfortable being around the cage.
If it is a wild bird, then it isn't going to like the cage at all...
It may take a long while to settle in.
The nice thing is, at least they don't bite..lol

If you do catch it, they make nice pets....I'm guessing but, it looks like it's a male by the size of it's eye ring but...it's just a pic so I could be wrong. Males coo really nice...

If you can see a small band around either of it's feet then it was a pet someone banded as a baby & it just happen to get loose.

Other than that if you prefer not to catch it, try keeping it "tame" by feeding it everyday for a while and then maybe hang a warming light somewhere on the patio perhaps that will give it someplace warm to stay?

Good Luck!

Dredging up an old thread here.
Did you ever catch the dove? lol
I used to have a male and he was the best pet ever.

Ripon, WI(Zone 4a)

No, unfortunately shortly after I started this thread it disappeared.
