How's your begonias doing?

Powder Springs, GA(Zone 7b)

Now that rain is becoming a common event again it's humid as a sauna. The begonias are coming on somewhat but boliviensis and 'Bonfire' are showing signs of rot (yuk).

Here is a new begonia I got off eBay a few weeks ago known only as a Thailand species.

I'm starting to move some of my begonias from shady areas to sunnier parts of the yard. Hard to believe July is half over.

This heracleifolia is finally starting to emerge from the shadow of oxalis.

If you can't grow begonias try ferns. Amazing that there is 3 different types of ferns in this begonia pot.

Cissus discolor (rex begonia vine) is very happy in the shade taking over any begonias in its way.

A community lasagna pan is good for starts including colocasia 'Black Magic'.

B. 'Tangalooma' defies description and it's very hard to capture its beauty in pictures.

Some new canes. Looks like Sophie but not the same as my original. One in back was bought a few months ago while the one in front is from HD a week ago ($3.97).

Beautiful photos and such an inspiration...I've collected a few more begonias since our move back and the pics and support here really are an encouragement!
Thanks for the show,

Cloudy skies have provided some shade lately followed by intense heat. I moved some begonias to more sun a couple of days ago but noticed some sunburn on one plant.

MsC,

Begonias are a lot of work at times but the rewards seem worth it during the summer and fall months. It is amazing how fast they grow during the hot, humid days of summer with a weekly shot of fertilizer.

Here is a picture of rex begonia vine (cissus discolor) that is overtaking a lot of my smaller pots. It looks like it could be a weed in the tropics.

Here is the really cool begonia I saw in Thailand last year. I'm hoping the one I got off eBay is the same thing but I really doubt it is.

'Boomer' (or 'Morocco'?) and 'Lowe's Pet' (I got this plant as a small hanging basket at Target 6 years ago).

'Sir John Falstaff' goes from pale green to dark black. 'Freddie' is the big leaf one next to it.

'Fuscomaculata' can be difficult at times but is well worth the effort.

Just beautiful..really nice.
I had good luck with my cane begonias & a few rhizomatous begonias but I've always struggled with the beautiful rexes..I'm trying a few more this year and I'm thinking of putting them in a few new terrariums...just common ones til I get a hang of it again...

We are getting way too much rain this year for my begonias,so perhaps next year I'll have some better cover for them.

I sure have enjoyed the photos on my rainy day here.

MsC :-)

Very nice Butch!!! Mine are doing well now, better than before as I have put a fertilizer injector on my hose, so now everyone gets a dilute bit of food with each watering.

Here are a few that are happy.

Your 'Flippant' looks so different than mine. Hard to believe those two leaves are on the same plant.

Here is my 'Flippant' hanging in the beech tree a couple of weeks ago. Thank goodness the cat bird (or some other small bird) didn't nest in my begonias this year - but they did nest in my orchid.

Just goes to show how environment can make such a difference in the same plant. I'm actually surprised this one made it through the winter as well as it did. So many of my rexies just crater.

I have 1 begonia that is over 30 years old! I think it is a rex. It has tiny pink blossoms. I wonder how long begonias last. Any ideas?
