AV Wedding Favors

El Paso, TX(Zone 8a)

Hi everyone. Another question from the newbie. ;o) I've been reading that it's fairly easy to propagate an AV by leaf. I'm getting married next fall and I've been thinking that it might be really neat to start a lot of AV plantlets to place on the tables at the reception, for people to take with them at the end of the night. I have a question, though. Does anyone know how long it usually takes for the leaf to become a recognizable AV? I'm trying to figure out how soon I should start them. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks! Melissa

From starting from a leaf, i think it takes a good nine months until you have a pretty av in bloom.............may have to think of ordering small plantlets.............i wouldn't place this particular order from Bluebird..............go to Lyndon Lyons or VioletBarn.................maybe someone like Snowrose will chime in and be able to tell you when you need to receive these plantlets................

You know, Suzanne did that - I don't know if she's still around...?

and if you search the AV forum for "wedding", you'll pull up her other threads.

Thanks for the link. I had to stop and take a look at the wedding party. She made such a beautiful bride! It's nice to know that the idea worked for another person. I was a little nervous that it might seem kind of silly. I'm thinking now that I might order the plants in advance from Gary Mikita (Gary's Out of Africa). He's got great wholesale prices and says that with enough advance notice he can grow the mini's that I need. He was also really nice and generous with his advice. I started thinking that maybe planning a wedding and trying to grow at least 100 AV's myself (when I've never propagated one before), might be a little much. :o)
