Sinn piresiana took a nap of, oh.... some 3 or 4 months last winter.
It finally came back and is now setting buds. This is another first bloom from seed so I'll get to confirm that the seeds were correctly labeled :-)
I can't wait!
You're killing me with these fuzzy, big-tubered, blooming plants...you know that, right?? LOL It's gorgeous! I love it! The buds themselves are really pretty. :o) Can't wait to see your pics of it in full bloom...
You grew THAT from seed?
If you don't mind me asking, how long did it take to develop that tuber?
I don't grow any of these and can't grow an AV whatsoever but I lurk around the Gessie forum for some reason and sure do admire all of everyone's pictures.
I love the furry little leaves on it :)
Are they hard to grow? Must require artificial light?
All... that... fuzz... *Gulp!* Makes me weak in the knees!!!
(Oohhh! The room is spinning!!!)
THUMP!!!
(Karen)
THAT is exceptionaly nice. I too love the silver velvety leaves and the striped effect of the buds all on top of a fat tuber. A superb accomplishment from seed.
Oohhh... OK! I'm back now.... head is still swimming though! ;-)
Amy, was this one on that big group seed order that Gail was making???
Key... forgot to say... you grow some of the most amazing plants! That's another beauty! What kind of light is that one getting? You grow things that most of us would never know about, if it weren't for you!
Karen
Very nice, Ki. What kind of camera are you using? The macro shot is superb.
GH
Oh, I love it! That first photo looks like it could be some sort of sea creature! So neat with all that fuzz! Can one purchase large tubers somewhere like that of Sinningia plants? I know you grew that from seed, Awesome job!
Lost my list and the link Gail had to the place she is gonna order seeds from! Hope that's on the list!
This one is on the list..............that is nice, Keyring.!!!! makes me get real excited.................I don't know how we are going to do this seed thing...............I had them all sent to RainGazer as she is more organized than I am..................The seeds were 80.00 (lots of them)...........and Rain has to send them out................it started out as only 5 people but it seems to be growing............Lin, figure out what is a fair way to do this without people getting their feelings hurt...................
Me .... you want me to figure it all out??!! How many folks signed up for these seeds? I would think whatever that number is, seed would be divided evenly and the total $ amount with figuring in the cost of the shipping charges as well as RainGazer's time/effort into all the work of dividing them. And, of course each person should reimburse RainGazer for the cost of postage on their seeds too.
I didn't even know you had ordered them yet! So ... is there a sign up sheet somewhere for folks who want seeds? I'm confusing myself so will go away now!
Maybe a new thread, once the seeds arrive... listing all the varieties available, and how to go about requesting the ones wanted...
Just a thought...
Group seed order? What group seed order??????
I hate to be a meanie, but this is too complicated for this one order...............Rain and I had already made a list of seeds............and i kept the names of people who had dmailed me before I ordered................i don't think it is possible to change it now. We had a thread going for a while about it...............people either spoke up at the time and said what they wanted or they dmailed me.............I made my list of people from that...............
next time, I promise that i will do a better job.................
I am not making any promises so don't hold me to it....................but when the seeds come in and the orders are filled...................if there is a lot of seed left over, I will come back on and make a post................
sorry for those who wanted in but didn't see the thread about it.
gail
Gail, don't worry about it, really.....I was being cute.........didn't mean to make you feel bad.... :)
But i do feel badly that so many people missed the thread!!!!!!!!!!!!! And you are not the only one who would like to get in on it..................
going to take a lazy nap...........raining for the whole week...............good sleeping!!
Wow! Those are awesome pictures! I love all the fuzz.. I googled it and Yuccado says it's zone 8-10. I wonder how it would do outside all year round?
Glad your babies woke up for you.
Yuccadoo is out of stock! :(
I just love that huge tuber! Wonder how long it takes from seed to have the tuber get that large?
My guess is that this plant is 3 years old. It's not that big - I have it way over-potted (didn't have any smaller pots at the time) in a 4" square pot. Too scared to pot it down right now, but I might do that later. *sigh*
GH - the cam is a p&s Canon A540. I do not recommend it if you like your purples to come out purple instead of blue.
Kim - I'm growing this outside this summer because it just wouldn't wake up inside. It's getting morning sun, although I have no idea if that is sufficient or not. Under lights, it was getting light from 4 fluor tubes. It goes dormant in winter, so it is actually a good candidate for growing outdoors in the summer, and storing somewhere above freezing during the winter. Water when you feel like it - very easy on this end (unless you love to water...). Fertilize in "spring".
Lin - not sure if anyone carries this one regularly....
Jan - I suspect it needs protection from tree rats, but otherwise it should be a good candidate for outdoors. We've been "upgraded" to zone 8, but I'm not going to even try it outside as balconies tend to be 1 or 2 zones lower than the ground. I would keep it in a dry spot during the winter, much like hardy cacti.
Ki, no one can get the purple and reds right............I found this photo program that is free on Vista............I have Vista on one hard drive and XP windows for everyday use as Vista is too hard for me...........let me change hard drive and find this program............all you do is click auto focus............that makes it great to see on DAve's site but not to print. (but the good part is you can undo any picture and do it again for printing......
be back.........have to turn the computer off to go to the other hard drive.
Gail, every p&s compensates differently. I prefer the purples to come out purple, and if that means (as it often does) that blue comes out purple, I'd rather have that. Post processing is post processing, and if you have multiple blues purples and reds in the photo, it's very difficult to adjust all of them correctly.
I meant to say that my now-dead Nikon p&s's blue processing was less obnoxious....
I know nothing about photography at all...............but this Windows Photo Gallery comes with the new Vista and has so many better features than my XP..........(in the photo dept.)
Now you have me wanting to put blues, purples and reds in one picture and see what the auto adjust does........
Here is a picture where the foliage is very dark green naturally.........so when I auto adjust it makes it almost look blue, BUT it is the only way to show just how true and dark the purple is on this Russian av.........
Sinningia envy here Keyring. Awesome plant and photo.
Thanks for sharing.
Patti
Oh, I love that Purple one Gail. The only purple AV I have is 'Rodeo Country' and I just love the kinda double flowers .... very deep purple!
I will stick a couple of leaves for Lubimaia Dochka.............it was a winner in Denver this year............
Keyring..That is one gorgeous plant even not in bloom.I just love the looks of it.Can't wait to see the blooms.
Doesn't she have the cutest little "Furry" things in her plant collection? Love it!
She does have the cutest furry things...this one sure looks unique, it's very pretty isn't it?
I don't know if I could ever get used to the various "nap" times of the different plants, remembering who should wake up and who should stay asleep..........I'd end up tossing some poor sleeping plant :)))
~Brenda
Ditto , Brenda!!!!!!!!!!
Brenda, you'd be so anxious to see it bloom, that you'd reach the point of never throwing anything away for fear that it might wake up the day after you trashed it! LOL One of my mini Sinns took forever to come out of dormancy, but I never considered dumping it! ;o)
I have a tendency to hide plants, or rather I forgot what all I have .... sometimes I find nice surprises when I'm out in my little jungle! Maybe I will never throw away a Gessie again, just in case there's a little surprise waiting to show it's face!
Yep! I'm a believer in the idea that if you are thinking about throwing it out... wait at least another month or more. I've had ferns come back after three months, as well as other plants.
Ok, I'm going to go with your method Lin, I'll just let them hide from me...now that Rain has put the image of some poor little plant waking in my trash can into my head I'll never be able to toss a thing..... LOL
~Brenda
LOL! What an image .... a little plant "waking up" in the gargage. Does make you feel guilty doesn't it?
The you add my very "wet" sense of humor (as opposed to dry)... and you have a little plant slithering around in the alley, going up to everything and everyone saying, "Are you my mommy?"
(Sorry... couldn't help myself... still an hour-and-a-half to the work day...)
