ACK! Hooo-yikes! Scared da snot outta me yesterday! I froze!!!
(anybody laughing yet.. you ought to be) =) =)
Had a snake slirk around a horse feed bucket yesterday, and take a dive under my tarp-covered hay stack. oh boy... that means tonight, when I go to pull one of my last two bales of hay out to feed my horse and/or when I pull out his halfa scoop of grain, I might run into that same snake.
He looked grey on top (dark grey), and had a white belly. I saw his head, and it looked normal, snake-like, and I don't remember any particular pattern to his top-side.
Should I be worried? Time to get a bullet for the 410 shotgun & see how good my aim is when I take the tarp off of the hay stack?
Yipes!
It's a Snake! But what kind?!?
Sounds like a chicken snake to me. Here's a link to see one. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pantherophis_obsoletus_obsoletus
They can get pretty large. I had one sunning on top of a groundcover juniper right by my doorsteps when I lived in East Texas. That sure got my attention!
That looks about right - Thanks.
I don't like the large-ness of him, but I don't think he's harmful enough to kill. At least until I feel horribly frightened.
Yikes!
they are all cobras......I don't kill but I found out just how fast I can move.
Angel, don't kill him. He eats rodents and that's a good thing. They're pretty harmless and more afraid of you than you are of them.
okay... so how do I shoo him outta the hay bale?? Just say "shoo snake?!?"
=)
You aren't what he's looking for, so if you are fairly active in the area for a few days, he'll probably get the hint and seek quieter places to hide and to hunt. Do some bale nudging, bale scooting, that kind of thing. :-) These snakes are beneficial critters. We had one climb up the column that led to our balcony a few years back. I woke up and saw this snake peering in the window at me, all wound around the column. Because we were ratless, and therefore boring, he made his way back down again and s-turned across the lawn and into the bordering scrub. Fascinating to watch over a cup of coffee.
I pulled a fresh bale out yesterday evening, and moved other bales & a few bags of pine shavings around in the process. No snake to be seen.
Maybe he read the post & got scared, and ran off. :)
Thanks all....
