seeking larval plant advice for the Giant Swallowtail.

San Diego, CA

I know that the Giant Swallowtail favors certain citrus for laying it's eggs, and even certains types of those citrus. Anyone have any good suggestions? I want to get something here for them to lay on. I've already had suggestions of Mexican Lime and Meyer Lemon trees. What are your experiences with these and what others can be suggested?
thanks,
Mark

Any citrus tree. Orange, clementine, lemon, you name it.

I get them several times a year on my tangerine, navel orange, valencia orange and mexican lime. They also use the native colima (prickly lime ash) and rue.

Happy butterflying!!!

Yup, they love my minneola orange tree. They look at (and turn their noses up) at my Meyer Lemon and Key Lime.

thank you for the info, I will head down tomorrow to my local nursery and see what I can find.

They use Hop Tree here and sometimes the local variety of Toothache Tree.

Here in DFW zone 8a the lemon and orange trees are not hardy.
So we use Texas Herculis Club, Zanthoxylum hirsutum, which is rather common around here, they love it, and also Rue.
