I succumbed to a moment of weakness this morning and brought home an Alocasia "Hilo Beauty" from Lowes. I've been researching round the web and opinions vary as to whether it is a full shade plant or part sun, how much sun, which time of day, etc.
Here's my question: Would it take 3 hours of late morning to early mid-day sun in zone 8? The spot I have in mind is in sun from 10AM to about 1PM. (I plan to keep it in a pot, so I can easliy move it if necessary.) I have some other varieties of alocasia and colocasia that get this much sun and are fine, but I want to be sure ...if I can. ;>
Any thoughts?
Thanks!
Deb
Alocasia Hilo Beauty and sun
mines in part shade
Phicks: Thanks for replying. I have it in almost full, but open shade at the moment. I went ahead and tried it in the spot I had planned for a couple of days and the leaves looked like they were cringing. :) Maybe next year when it's a little bigger and has time to adjust. The sun's pretty brutal this time of year (as you know, being in FLA).

Deb, 10-1 is the hottest sun of the day, it MIGHT take 3 hours of direct early morning sun. I keep mine in part shade, too. That's nice it's in a pot, so you can move it around until your both happy with it's spot. I think it really prefers light or bright shade...
I think afternoon sun is hotter than am sun-at least judging how I run for the house come 1pm! I can work outside until then-but the afternoon sun is brutal and thats when you see the hottest temps happen.
I have Hilos in direct sun for the whole morning and they are fine. I think sometimes when you put a plant like Hilo beauty in more direct sun, that the leaves will burn, but the newer leaves are fine, and after that it is fine.
Deb mines also in water
AuntB, Tigerlily: Sounds like the consensus is a little AM sun ok; mid-day to PM sun bad. :) I will keep it in mostly shade for now and see how it goes.
Phicks: I do have a water garden...so that's another thing for me to think about.
Thanks to everyone.

Good find Deb, I'll have to check my Lowes. I would love to have Hilo.
Linda: I was in the Lowe's here in Summerville again on Friday and they had several, so it's a good chance they have them in Col'a., too. :)
Haven't gotten out there yet, but it's on my list.
