Garden tropicals from seed

St. Paul, MN(Zone 4b)

Hello All.

It's high summer here in Minnesota and the gardens are vibrant! I thought I would share a few pics of tropicals that I have grown from seed.

Here is Papaya 'Solo', started from seed in February of 2006. It gets lots of attention from people walking by. I am hoping to see flowers, and even fruit, yet this summer.

looks great Erick. Do you have the Papaya in the ground or a pot??

Here is Cassia alata, one of two that I started from seed in February of 2007 (five months ago). I am thrilled at their growth - they are very solid plants now. And I love how their leaves fold up every evening. By 7:00 PM, they are nearly closed. This shot was taken at about 7:30 PM this evening.

Behind it on the left is a white Clitoria and on the right is Kennedia nigricans.

now don't go killing any green or yellow with tiny blue dots caterpillars on it. It is the host plant for a few different sulphurs

Here are Canna 'Tropical White' and 'Tropical Rose'. The white is actually more ivory, but still very attractive. These are from Park Seeds. I really like them because they stay short, bloom most of the summer, and are easy to get through our winters as neglected indoor plants.

To the right of them is anise Hyssop, a fabulous magent for bees and butterflies.

OMG Kennedia nigricans!!!!! If you get seed please save me some. I lost mine over winter without ever getting to see it bloom ;-(

Finally, here is one of my four Kniphofia uvarias, started from seed in February of 2007. I can't believe how lush and full they have become, and hope to see flowers yet this summer.

Never let climate stop you from growing cool things!

Erick

Hello Donna! Always good to hear from you.

The Papaya is in a tiny 12" pot, but has now rooted into the ground. It will be a real thrill to chop it out this fall.

I wish I had more cool butterflies here. They are welcome to eat my plants down to the ground! But I am just too far north.

I only got one Kennedia to live, and it is now LOVING our tropical climate. I plan to root cuttings soon. Another plant that I hope to see blooms on this summer.

crossing my fingers for you

Way to go, Eric! The papaya does look neat. I got one but didn't grow it from seed. I hope mine blooms to. I can't believe the size of the leaves on your Cassia. I bought one at a plant sale at our conservatory but the leaves are much smaller. It is cool that the leaves fold up at night.

I had no idea butterflies do not live in the far north. That must mean you do not have any caterpillars eating your plants. Interesting.

Congratulations on growing all those tropicals under what has to be trying conditions.

We do have butterflies up north! I'm further north than Eric...lol. I started a thread on my Monarch babies.
