CLOSED: 4 O-clocks

North Augusta, ON

Go figure....I traded off all my 4 O-clock seeds cause I'm not fond of them, only to discover I'm gonna need them to help deter Japanese beetles away from Hubby's prized Lilies.....I can send postage for them, or I may have something here....things in the garden just starting to make seeds. I don't mind waiting til this year's seed crop cause it's too late here to grow them...but for next year I need them.
Thank you all in advance.

LeeAnne, I was the happy recipient of a few of those seeds of yours! I'm planting some of the different colors now from seeds I've received from others, but did already have lots of the magenta colored 4 o'clocks. I can send you lots of seeds from those if you want some...plmk.

Hi,
Could you please tell me if 4 o'clocks bloom the first year? I have MANY plants that are growing but no blooming. So I thought maybe they dont bloom the first year... Thanks for any help...

Mine always do...they are an annual here.....but you can dig them up and store them over the winter like a geranium or a dahlia....

Mine are always mid to late summer bloomers. I have a tuber from seeds that I planted almost 12 years ago. I just leave it alone and it comes up when it comes up. I just noticed it today. It's looking a bit punier than previous years but it has been a bit on the dry side. You'll find with the mixed colors, usually the dominant color will win out and you'll see more reseeders of that color. For me it was the hot pink/fuschia one. We're in the same zone so trust me you'll get flowers soon. Then watch out for the seed! They are super easy to collect, just wait until they are black.

When I started with the 4o'clocks I cleaned out a corner in my lot and spread different colored seeds and they came up that same year and got extremely huge. I had to sometimes cut the stalks that were about 3" in diameter to keep them groomed. In the winter they died down but I didnt dig up the tubers. This spring I did notice them coming up again so I prepared the area with more mulch and now they are again up and real big too. I have several colors, white, yellow, fuschia, pink and some that come in 1/2 and 1/2 colors (believe it or not) I love the fragrance and the fact that they are very attractive and visible in that particular corner.

I let the red birds eat the majority of the seeds but still pick some and have lots if anyone is interested.

I have never noticed them having a scent......my fav scented plant in the garden has to be the nicotine...

San Antonio, TX

Oh there is definitely a scent. Anytime I get close to the area where my 4o'clocks grow you can smell the light scent. Im sure my neighbor likes it cuz it's so close to her fence.

I will have to watch...er...smell...for that next year.....

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

These are very tall and no signs of flowers... I will send in a picture later... I have planted them in 3 areas and they are all the same... So do you think I could trim these back? They are very tall .... So yours did not bloom the first season? I have yellow 4's and they come up every year but these are mixed colors and new sooooo I have no idea what is going on with these... The yellow were here when we bought the house...
Thanks for any help.

Susan I grew 4 o'clocks from seeds starting in April I think. I'm just getting flowers on my. They're about 12 inches and I have a mix of colors from a seed trade so I'm not sure what I'm going to end up with exactly. Yellows and purples are starting to flower. Many aren't aren't showing flowers yet so maybe it has to with their color? I've never planted them before so I don't have much to say about them.

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7a)

Mine are just barely starting to flower this week. Once they start they really don't stop until almost frost. The foliage starts looking a little icky but I usually just let them go.

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

Ours are just starting to bloom from seed.

San Antonio, TX

Have had numerous requests to trade other seeds for mixed 4o'clock seeds. Still have some but they are going quickly........

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Mine are now blooming or at least one batch is... :-) so the others should follow sooon.. The first ones are pink... very pretty...
Thanks for all the help.
