It seemed like it took forever for my rocks to lay. We got them in April and I didn't see an egg till almost October. It was worth it though, I love their big brown eggs. Last year I raised some chicks that had been fertalized by my Americauna rooster. Now I get great big kaki and pale avacado eggs colored eggs. The sweetest rooster I ever had was a barred rock. He would sit on your lap even when he was over 2 years old.

Paitence is a virtue, but virtue doesn't go nearly as well with bacon and toast.

Yesterday the guys that live behind us was feeding them with out promishion he feeded them rice crispys.. I will wait for them to lay thier eggs.. The hens and the rooster run in to the woods and
they eat everything they see is it good for them???

Tracey, didn't get to call you this weekend, very busy, sorry. How old are your chickens now? They will lay eggies when there ready, like jylgaskin said, be paitent. Your rooster is beautiful, he will love your girls for a very long time.

The chickens know what to eat, don't worry about them free ranging. Free ranging makes good eggs.

Rice crispies are fine for chickens. Chickens are actually pretty smart when it comes to food. If they have other food or forage available, they avoid things that will hurt them.

Thank you very much...

Tracey, if your hens are out and about in the woods, do you think it's possible they are laying in the woods. It does happen as they like to hide a nest........

Just a thought.

Wow, Julie may be right. They should be laying at 28 weeks. I'll bet you have a whole pile of eggs somewhere. We had some free rangers and I thought that the arracaunas had stopped laying for some reason as the daily "Easter Egg Hunt" only turned up brown eggs. One day I moved something in the shed and discovered a pile of over 50 eggs. They had been crawling under the door to get in there and I never noticed. Annother time we found a whole pile of brown eggs under the smoke house. Chickens are prety clever.

Julie and jygaskin,,
I have to look their in the woods and i hate bugs and ticks too.. yehh..
Tracey

If you have a tick problem you need a couple of gunies. They are great on ticks!

Find any eggs yet Tracey? I have all Black Australorps and Buff Orpingtons except for one little Oriental hen that came up missing a few weeks ago. I found her after a few days, she was sitting on 17 eggs under a boxwood by my house, and I don't even have a rooster! So, I called up another chickener who always has fertile eggs and he gave me 7 BB Red OEG eggs. Should hatch by the end of the month. Be sure and look anywhere that a chicken can go. They hide them well!

Those are beautiful! That buff looks a little out of place. :)

I've been trying to figure out what my black ones are. Some have pink/red faces and some have black faces and feet.....

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

That's how my Black Australorps are. Do the feathers have a beetle-green sheen to them?

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

That is part of the problem. I think all the black ones have a blue/green sheen. LOL I'll look closer.

Here is a side by side of the faces but I need better pics of the bodies. The ones with black faces to have black feet with white on the bottom. I think the ones with the pink faces have gray feet.

They are Black Australorps or BA/crosses as far as I can tell.

Thanks! I will get better pics when I get a chance.

Hey All! I've been gone everyday for almost a week, helping a newly divorced friend get moved to her new home! I've been getting home so late that I have just fallen into bed every night, usually around 12:00! Please forgive me Tracey for not returning your calls!
Tracey , have you built nests for your Hens yet? If you have , fill them with grass or hay, and put some wooden or plastic eggs in them . The Hens will then know where to lay! Have you heard any of your Hens go, " Brrrrrrawwwwwk brawwk braawwwk" and walk kind of slowly like they just cant get any faster , and do they have a brooody talk instead of a cackle? This means they are getting ready to lay and are looking for a place to lay! If your Hens are strutting and are going" KaaaaaaCk-kak-kak-kak-kak, and the rooster is doing the same thing or imatating the sound the Hens are making , that means the hen is laying somewhere!
Okay every body quit laughing!!!!! I havent lost my mind yet!!!! ( Nope not....Yet!)

Williamsburg, MI(Zone 4b)

Nice impressions. Do you do Bush or Barbra Strisand? Maybe we could get you on Leno.

Robertsville, MO

Hey everyone I got my first egg yesterday in the coop..

ready to lay...my roo does that sound to protect them hens..
Tracey

Yaaaaay!!! Congratulations on finding your first egg! Isnt that the greatest feeling? Its like you finally got pay off for all the hard work and love!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Oh Tracey!! I'm so happy for you! Will you let the hen keep it?

'chelle
those pictures you showed of the black chickens with the black faces....
look an aweful lot like Sumatras
but the Sumatras have yellow on the bottoms of their feet

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I just went out and looked. Apparently I have THREE different types of blacks. One of them with the black beak, actually has red on it's face and ears and yellow legs, which fits the Henderson chart for a Sumatra. But, it also has white on the front of it's neck and the feathers going down it's back, have a single white stripe on them.

Of all the black birds, they all have tucked rears except one, who's stands up and is narrow. Of the tucked ones, some go smooth down their backs and some are like a separate tuft of feathers.

Maybe I should give up and call them all chickens. LOL And I should probably get off this barred rock thread and start a black chicken thread!

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Sumatras have black legs but the bottoms of their feet are yellow, the foot pads.......
yellow legs would be a disqualification
what are tucked rears?
or were you saying tuffted ears?

Northern Michigan, MI(Zone 5a)

You're gonna have to post some chicken butt pics now....lol

Julie

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

ROTFLMAO!!!!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Y'all are picking on me! LOL I mean their rump feathers sort of wrap around their buns and don't stick up in the air. This is the chart I meant. http://www.ithaca.edu/staff/jhenderson/chooks/chooks.html Is a shank not a leg? Is it a thigh? STOP LAUGHING!! :)

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Hey , Dont worry 'bout it! With your watchin' for tucked under rumps and yellow feet and My Imitation of the egg laying Hens (Braaaaaawk brawk), we can make a fortune as Stand Up Comics, Making everybody laugh!!!! $$$$$$$

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

You should see some of the chat on the daylily forum! Things have sort of run a muck with talk of my chickens being able to write on eggs! Not only that, they put the eggs by daylilies so you can find them. LOL

Hmmm, I never really thought of my photography efforts going the way of "chicken butt" art. Ahem!

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Okay okay!!! This I have to see! Give me a link girl , so I dont waste time looking for it!!!
LOL!!!

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

are you saying the butts are a cushion?

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Well, it started here.....recognize the flower?? LOL http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/527829/ then somehow bled over into here: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/749753/

I've been really bad to jazzpunkin. She came to pick up a couple of birds for a lady at her church. I'd told her she could have some for $5 as I had several of some varieties. She picked out a nice orange and brown one (the one we are trying to ID in the last pic above) and one of the barred rocks. She also had to pick up some plants for a mutual friend. Her car was loaded, she paid me $10 and just as she was leaving decided to take one more bird-one of the whites I have so many of. Without much more thought, we got the bird into the car and she left. I've been calling her a chicken thief since she left. LOL Poor jazz!

cushion?? STOP THAT! LOL
