does anyone know if it is worth it to try flowering maple (abutilon) near the SC coast? do yall think it would do ok near the house in a microclimate?
abutilon near coast????
Which one exactly? Some are fine for around here some are not. Nice idea BTW. Think I'll put that on my list for what I might plant next year.
Here's one that should do well. http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/49913/
I don't know much about these so I'll have to do some research. Looks they flower most of the year and are a small tree.
I like this one. http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/76262/
i dont really care what kind.... i really like that gold dust variety. i just want one that will live here well. thanks for the compliment on the idea.... it just randomly popped into my head, having no relation what so ever to what was going on, as do most of my thoughts and ideas.. npw i just gotta see where i could get one.....
I planted this one this spring:

I got it from PDN. So far, so good. It's been blooming happily and growing well. It's not typical, it has much smaller blooms. It's cute.
that is an interesting one. i havent seen one like that. too bad its not hardy here. that one looks nothing like the ones that resemble hibiscus

This one is.
Hmmm.... PDN says all their abutilons are hardy from zones 7b to 10. I've had great success with their plants, so we'll see how this one does over time.
whats PDN?
Here you go diehard, http://www.plantdelights.com/Catalog/Current/
It's a nursery in Raleigh NC that specializes in unusual plants and tropicals hardy down to 7b. A bit pricey, but an awesome reference. I usually look up plants using their catalog to determine hardiness
they've got some cool plants
Also, diehrd, a good resource for your backyard, too
PDN is a good read. Lots of ideas but not cheap at all.
Yeah, I should say that there's plenty of stuff there that you can find waaayyy cheaper elsewhere
I haven't been there is years but there was a place a bit south of PDN called Big Bloomers that had some really nice plants for significantly less $. It is in Sanford if my memory serves me correctly.
Any of you Tarheels been ther lately?
Yes, there are lots of places that have things less expensive than Plant's Delight- but, I don't buy things from them I can get at Lowe's, or even the local Garden Center. The Garden Gate on Hilton Head isn't much cheaper. ;*> It's a great place to visit if you ever get up there during their open houses.
Jenny
i've never been... my main nursery is palm trees and garden center of South Carolina at their Bluffton/ Hilton Head location. that place is pretty cheap.... until you get into the non-native palms (phoenix, washingtonia, syagrus, butia, livistona, chamaerops, trachycarpus) other than that, they all the cmmon lowcountry landscpap plants are cheap they also have lots of exotics like citrus strelitzia papyrus tree ferns datura cassia. idk what they are like @ the charleston and myrtle beach locations, but here they are great! yall should check 'em out @

Thanks Diehard, I had heard that place was pretty good; now I will surely have to check it out.
Jenny, do you mean the Garden Gate in Beaufort or the Greenery on HHI? They are both over the top on prices. Ned Rahn in Port Royal has good plants and good prices but you have to call to make sure he will be there. He is in the book.
I bought an Abutalon Belle Apricot this year and then my son gave me another no ID; it has yellow spots on the leaves and the flowers are small and a creamy yellow. They are both still in pots although if I ever get off the computer perhaps I'll find the time to get them in the ground.
I got my citrus trees from Ned. He's out of town a lot BTW.
Diehard where exactly is palm trees and garden center of South Carolina ? I've never been there. Oh forgot map quest should do it.
Oh I've seen that place and wanted to stop in there. 170 is now know as the okatie highway? They have to stop naming thing's it's confusing me. 278, Fording island road? Okaite, Bluffton? I'm not sure what is considered Bluffton and what is okatie.
okatie in my opinion is everywhere between Hardeeville and jasper county, and the little strip of marsh right after Island West, north to where you start getting into Beaufort. that is just my understanding...
