Trellis

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9a)

I finally found a trellis I like for my wild hoyas. It measures 13 in wide and 25.5 long, it's made from a sturdy plastic.

I like it...the biggest problem I have found when trying to use trellises is them toppling over....they need to invent a small 4 sided one....

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

A nursery close by my job sells those and i have looked at them many times but never bought one. I need to get a few and try them out on some of my smaller hoyas.

Yes, nice trellis...but it can get floppy, NO? Where have you found wild hoyas, Awanda....in Arizona????? LOL

Big Lots, Sistah A? LOL! I do like the trellis, though - some of my bigger leafed hoyas would do well on that, I think! And, yes, if there's a field where hoyas are going wild, could you point me in that direction - I'll bring scissors - and a shovel!! LOL

Sistah K would you believe I didn't buy these from Biglots, but at Michaels:-). We do have wild hoyas growing in the desert here (Carol). The way my hoyas are growin I'll welcome you with scissors and a shovel Sis. K.......just one time tho:-). I find that if you have something to lean the trellis's against, they do really well.

I have a few daylilies and when the tall part dries I cut them from the plant and use as sort of a trellis. I have an angel wing begonia that I used 2 to hold it upright just this week. So if you do grow daylilies you might want to give it a try?

Nice find, Awanda. Do you have a reserved parking spot at Michaels like you do at Big Lots?
On those trellis that fall over, I just sink the plastic pot into a clay pot. Paul ran conduit and wire out to the pool last summer and I have been using the left over wire to make trellis(s). It bends easy , yet, is strong enough for good support.

LOL Mel, no parking space....yet. I finally put my Imperialis on a trellis!

Looks really nice all pinned in it's place. Are you finding it wabaly (sp?) at all? I put mine in clay pots like Mel. It works really well.

Dang, that is one healthy imperialis! I have re-rooted some cuttings as mine has gotten so many burn spots and unruly. You must have a nice shady place for it. It looks great!

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

Mel, the imperialis that you sent me as a cutting a year or so ago is now over 9ft tall. I just keep bringing it back down towards the bottom of its trellis and wrapping it around itself.

My imp. mosaic is growing the same way!!

9 feet! I hadn't realized they could get that tall. I have a multiflora that is my tallest, first hoya for me. Can it get that big too? Of course I will probably cut it to root out new ones.

Mel both of my Imperialis are doing great. Here's a picture of my other one. Tami I did as Mel suggested (put in clay pot) and mine are holding steady. I keep both of mine in shade in the greenhouse.

Cactus, I dont know about the multiflora. Mine is more of a bush type.

I have several eriostemma type hoyas that grow straight up and are 9ft or more tall as well. I dont let let them get that high before I bring them back down though.

I grow my imperialis on those spiral steel spikes that you can get from home depot. Three of those in a pot with the top ends wired together to make a 6ft high tee-pee type support. The plant has reached the top of that and when it does I start sending it back towards the bottom. When it hits bottom,we start going back up towards the top again!

If I unwound the imperialis or my H. ciliata they would probably each be at least 10-12ft in length.

Carol says to allow your eriostemmas to grow straight up in order to get them to bloom. My ciliata grows around a wire hoop and has never made a peduncle. I stopped wrapping it and am now allowing it to grow upright towards the top of the gh and that part of the vine has now made it's first peduncle.

Glad your cutting is doing better than it;s Mother plant, David. Isn't that the way it usually goes? Heck, my 20 year old Son has a great job and just bought a house. I swear that child is more mature 20 than his Mom was at 30!
Interesting on the letting the vine go straight therory. Every eriostemma I have grows only where it wants to! Will have to give that a try on the shy bloomers.

Well.... "straight" up isn't all that necessary...but I do find that when they are allowed to climb they are more likely to want to bloom...

My H. ciliata has been growing around a hoop for a little over a year now. I've had the plant for over 2 years. The first year it hung down in a basket. A couple of months ago I decided to take the newest long runners and bring them up towards the top of the green house and then let them grow towrds the front trailing along the rafters and all of a sudden it now has peduncles on it.

Guess i'm gonn a have to do this with the rest of my eriostemmas and the imperialis plants as well in order to get them to bloom for me.

Does anybody know of a list of eriostemmas? I've tried looking it up but can't figure it out.

Jeri,
I don't know the full list of eriostemmas, but I'm looking at the David Liddle catalog and under the "Eriostemma section" it lists the following:
affinis, ciliata, coronaria, guppyi, lauterbachii, purpurea, aff. sussuela.
I'm SURE there are more....

Thatnk you Gabi I want to try growing them straight and see if they bloom faster.
