propagating begonia with a caudex

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I killed this baby plant two days after i got her..........begoniacrazii told me then to treat her like a succulent..........I rooted her and she roots so easily...........hate to take her out and plant her up as she will probably rot again!!! (LOL)

I now have 6 very healthy plants...................begoniacrazii............where are you? I need to know what medium to plant them up in.............big roots completely fill the pots of 1/2 perlite and 1/2 vermiculite.................don't want them to die on me..........

surely out of all you begonia lovers, there is someone who has grown a begonia with a caudex to be treated like a cactus or any succulent..............only i don't grow cactus either.............

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

yup, that's how I treat mine, like a succulent - though mine get watered just about every day due to our heat and dry air (so do most of my succulents and they don't mind, but live in an entirely different environment) . I use a loose soil blend, here's the soil recipe page for the Sacramento Begonia Society http://cutebassethounds.com/begonia_web/images/soil_recipes_sac_ABS.jpg

I use a blend similar to 'Joan's' but there are a few things I don't add (Leaf mold, hoof & horn, superphosphate and ironite since the soil i buy is pretty good to start with) --- for B. partita and another few that I have (B. 'Fairy Wings', B. 'Tweedle Dee' and B. 'Tweedle Dum'), I just added extra perlite to the blend.

I would make sure you don't over water your starts. Perhaps just repot one and see how it does before you take the rest out of their terrarium home. That way you won't lose them all if what you try doesn't work. Just a thought!

Nice work by the way in rooting them!
