Well I finally found something my husband would like from the vegetable garden. Black beans which as a CubanAmerican he's eaten since he was a child.
Now how and where do you grow black beans and can you just buy the seeds at the local market or can they be grown from the bags we buy from the store to cook?
What would Ricky Ricardo do?
How to grow black beans in my vegetable garden
Kerril - black beans are as easy and unfussy as any other bean. You might be a bit late for starting them this year unless you have a green house. But don't let that stop you from putting some in - if its a long summer, you could get a good harvest. It is always worth trying the ones from a package you buy in the store (sometimes these have been heat treated so they won't germinate) - or you can try Seed Savers, I'm sure they have the beans you are looking for.

If you do have a greenhouse - it might be worth starting the seeds inside - then transplant some of the young plants out doors and keeping some in large pots in the greenhouse - that'll extend your growing season since you are about 4 weeks late getting them started.
then, mark your diary to remember to get them going a bit earlier next year. thats the nice thing about gardening, there's always next year.
good growing.
Thanks for the tips. I soaked some we bought at the store for a couple of hours and put them in the garden. You are right, next year I will start earlier. It will be easier as this year we had to wait out the rains before setting up the raised beds and there is my laziness factor never to be outwitted. I suspect all will turn out well though. This feels like a good growing season.
Laziness factor gets reinterpreted around here as 'contemplative' - gardening is very contemplative - festina lente - hasten slowly - so nice being married to a man with a classical education, you can find lots of gorgeous phrases that let you do nawt. Looking forward to a good bowl of bean soup.
The first pot of bean soup will be in your honor. yuuuummmm (how do you say yum in latin?)
yuminium?
