Hydrangeas growen in container ?

Does anyone know about growing Hydrangeas in containers? and what would happen in winter will in come back?

I should think you could grow them in container but in your climate the container would need additional protection from freezing. The roots will be more vulnerable and freezing will kill the plant.

A large container would be difficult to move in/out. Sinking it into the ground and mulching well may be the solution. Do inground Hydrangeas survive your winters normally?

If it's Hydrangea macrophylla, I think zone 5 is about the bottom end of their hardiness range so definitely leaving them out and exposed in a pot is not going to be good. You could sink the pot in the ground and that should ensure the plant's survival, but unless you buy one like 'Endless Summer', 'All Summer Beauty', 'Forever and Ever', etc that blooms on new as well as old wood, you're also going to have to pile leaves or something over it to protect the buds from freezing off (this would be true if you planted it directly in the ground too)

Thanks The card said Nikko Blue Hydrangea it also said Hydrangea Macrophylla Nikko Blue Do you think If I moved into house in fall and put it where it is cold ( Like my bedroom 60 and nite) will it grow next spring I could put it in crawl space or attic not very big plant yet so I can carry it still what see you ideas but that?

For Nikko Blue, you definitely can't just leave the pot sitting outside for the winter, and since it blooms on old wood if you sink the pot in the ground, you'll need to pile leaves over the plant to protect the buds. I'm not sure how hydrangeas would respond to being inside the house during the winter, I guess that should be OK but I don't have any personal experience. If you have a garage you might be able to put it there too, guess it depends on how cold the garage gets but that's somewhere else to consider.

Dimmer, a friend of mine has grown a Nikko Blue in a container for 4 or 5 years. I know he does bring it in for winter.. we're in zone 5. I'm not sure how, water/light/temp, but I will ask. I kept a lady in red in a container outside last winter, did very well.

I grow two in containers... and they have been wintering over .. My containers are 12" x 12" x 48" and are up in the air.. air temperatures all around.. and I'm pretty sure they will freeze solid at some point.. they will warm up early.. before the ground..a fact the squrrels like... as they climb five floors to burry their nuts with me.. this provides a late winter snack... when their ground burried nuts are locked in..
