Neem Oil

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Hello,
I would like to know if anyone here has used Neem oil and if yes what for and also how much do you mix with water... Is it ok just to use to keep bugs away ??? I have heard good and bad about this so I am coming here to ask... Thank you for any help.

Yes, I've used Neem, and a few others have too that I know of. Spray in the evening since it is an oil. It is a natural fungicide and helps with mealies, spider mites, aphids, and other insects. I just follow whatever it says on the bottle, which I can't remember now -- maybe one or two tablespoons with a gallon of water.

Ditto here. I had some bugs I couldn't identify and water spray didn't help, so I used the Neem oil per directions on the bottle. Sprayed in the evening and kept it in filtered light for a couple of days.

Thank you both for your help...

You're welcome. One thing I learned recently is that Neem does not discriminate between good bugs and bad bugs, so only use it when you need it for a pest, otherwise you might be killing off the good bugs you need, too.

That is so true. I have so many lady bugs in my garden right now that I don't dare use anything.

I am not going to use it yet... I got and then was not sure if I could really use it on Plumerias... So thanks... I have had a praying mantis living on one of my plumerias since it was just hatched.. It still is not that big but getting bigger everyday.

My bottle of Neem sat on the shelf for quite a while - I thought it was a good thing to have around and didn't want to have to rush out and find it when I needed it.

Clare, I guard my lady bugs! I have milkweed growing just for them - they love those yellow aphids. When I find something on a plant, I carefully move a LB over there for a buffet. They are voracious little critters. So far we've kept our apple trees organic and I'm trying like heck to keep them that way, along with everything else.

That is also why I got it...LOL I also got something for rust as last year I did have a bit of it... Not much but I did get it... I ordered this stuff on line and it sits waiting with the neem...LOL
It looks like it is going to pour here YESSSSSSSS We need the rain...

I love ladybugs too and am happy to see them in my garden. I got some stuff that just sits in the cabinet too, but eventually, I will use it on the spider mites. Luckily, the brugs which have the spider mites are on the other side of the house from all the ladybugs.

Susan - I'll find the Neem link I kept last year. My bottle says to mix w/plain ole dish soap then w/water and spray away. Just a side note for folks - the darker sedums aren't happy w/Neem oil :( Found that out the hard way.
Here ya go: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/648454/ Another FYI - if you're going to spray fert do so a day or so prior to using the Neem oil.
