I want to grow Strawberries. I've read, that in Texas, Strawberries are started in fall, so I want to start planning. Does anyone have any experience with growing strawberries? Which are the best varieties for this area, and who supplies the plants? Any advice appreciated.
Growing Strawberries in Texas
I have grown them in the past, but not recently. Season was short, but production was fairly good. I got plants from the local nursery known as Rainbow Gardens.
Here's a TAMU article:

I got a few earlier this year at Schumacher's and ate small quantities of strawberries for quite a while...even now, there's one last strawberry on one plant (I have them in pots). Of course, this was one of those unusual years with more rain and less heat. I found a couple of info links. Don't know about varieties...the county ag extension office should have a list.

Oh, I forgot to mention....those strawberries from the grocery store...they don't taste good compared to "real" strawberries grown locally. Just try some pick-your-own strawberries if you don't believe it. Yummmmm!

Thank you for the info.
I found an online source for the Chandler Strawberries one of the articles recommends.

They offer organic plants in 3" pots.
If I get 24 the price with shipping is $64 - so a little over $2.50 per plant.
Does that sound reasonable?
Seems a tad steep to me. But then, I haven't grown strawberries for about five years so don't have a handle on pricing. And the shipping is probably some form of speed express that costs more. Try calling a couple of your local nurseries to inquire if they can order for you from their suppliers.
