Surprising Sinningia !

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

Thought this might be of interest to some...
It's one of my oldest sinningia's, I really love it. Sinningia Cindy Ella.
It had a lil mishap with my not so 'graceful hand' , I knocked it off the shelf dusting of all things! Anyway it hit the floor slid into the kitchen and popped out of it's snug lil pot...
Just look at the size of the tuber!!! I was amazed, I had no idea it had grown so large...I thought they were supposed to be pea sized..lol

That is a quarter next to it....maybe that's normal???
Anyway we always show the tops side of plants , here's a nice look at the working end.

Enjoy,
MsC

Yummy, I like a nice fat tuber :-).

Don't make the mistake I once made of putting it in too big a pot. (well, I thought it was an "appropriate" size pot...) Snug is good.

Good morning ladies!
Thats big. And a beautiful flower it is.
Do the tubers get larger every year? Or get to a certain size and stop growing? Thanks for posting.I learn something new all the time about these plants!

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one with( not so 'graceful hand' ) LOL.

Very nice MsC!

I have one that I don't know the name of and it was given to me years ago and it is HUGE! I thought I had sent a photo in at one time or other. the flowers are perfectly white.

Thanks for sharing it!

I LOVE Sinningias too!

What a Pretty Sinningia! Love it! That flower is so nice.

hee hee ... regarding the "not so graceful hand" .... seems some of us have that same problem. One day last week I had taken everything off of one of my stands, dusted real well .... groomed all the plants, put everything back so nice and neat .... then went to open the blinds higher and my arm hit one plant and knocked it clear into two others and they all went flying onto the floor. I had just vaccumed the floor too!

I still think those tubers look like a big ol' grub! They give me a bit of a start each time I see one. LOL I re potted some Kohlerias recently and about jumped out of my skin when there was one of these on the bottom of the root ball :)) Can you tell I'm still a newbie to these??

I do have a question though, if you were to take that nice fat tuber and break it in half would you then be able to grow two plants?? Is that how you would "propagate" these? Or one of the ways that you could? Just curious, I'm looking forward to trying some in the future and especially after seeing this beautiful bloom!

haha, I did that with the kohleria type rhizomes too!

To prop Sinns by tubers, as I understand, you need an eye on each piece of the tuber. If all the growths are coming up from the middle, it makes it a bit difficult....

Uh~oh... there you go again...you know me oh to well...ok, so it was in a
2 in and I moved it up to a 2 1/4 in chord pot so it would set better on the wicker pot...I did add perlite to the bottom and gave it a lil fresher mix...I had not re potted it for 2 years. It seemed happy ~so I didn't want to upset the lil darling.

Yes, you could do that...if you weren't me...lol I'd probable drown the poor thing..There was a thread on here where one of the hybridizers explained the best way to do that...probable in the stickies...

For me...I think I will wait and take a cutting or set seeds...nothing lost that way.

Lin, I'm glad to know I'm not the only one that's slightly less than graceful....at least I have a buddy. I used to be better but my eyesight is getting soooo bad...I gotta get some new glasses, soon!

Glad to know ya'll enjoyed the pic...it is a very pretty one & a good grower. I'm finally getting the rest of things settled here after the move .
we just finished moving all the books for our library out of the climate controleed storage. Now I can try to get the plants in better growing condition..I still have many in their moving containers that are like terrariums...they just don't have enough light to do well though.

Drats about your plant falling out! Looks great, though!

Key, could you show us a picture of how big a pot we should use relative to the tuber size? I have some florist gloxinia in 4" rounds and wondered sometimes if the pots weren't too big.

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

Hiya Snow glad to see ya back...
It's cutie.Good size flowers too!

I knew we had a thread somewhere..thanks for linking it up...

I think the florist glox is not picky about pot size. I usually see them in 6" pots..... sometimes 4", sometimes 8". Grown from seed, they will bloom in a 3 oz dixie cup (about 2" diameter) - the tuber will basically be 2" diameter... lol.

(MsC, I'm sure your pot size is fine :-)

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

Keyring,
OH goodie... I'd hate to loose it cause I over potted it...

Thanks for the reminder..it was a bit early in the morning when I did all this..LOL

Hey, I wanna see a photo of one of those big fat grub tubers!

Drumheller, AB(Zone 2a)

Morning!

Here is a photo of my big old one that is over thirty years old and it is in a eight inch clay pot....I am so afraid of overwatering it so I keep it in a clay pot.

simply amazing are these tubers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Drumheller, AB(Zone 2a)

Hi Gail,

Yes my dear those are tubers....they are HUGE!!!! I asked the lady that gave them to me about 15 years ago or more now I think...I can't remember if I had them before we moved into this house or not. Anyway she said 30-35 years old and my gosh I sure wasn't going to be responsible for their demise....that is why they are in a clay pot....but the tuber is round yet it is elongating on one side for whatever reason. So I guess they must be able to live indefinitly as long as one looks after them. The flowers are quite large on them too but they don't last very long.

Joanne

Hi MsC! Lovin' Cindy Ella! Those Sinns are just the best, aren't they? That's a mighty fine tuber she's got there, too. It's neat how they grow so big, I think. :o) I'm awful about knocking plants, over, too, so don't feel too bad about it. LOL

That's amazing, Joanne! Very cool! :o)
