I'm soooo bummed!

Howell, MI

Today I let my ducks out on the pond.......I was going to keep them in the duck house for another week just to be on the safe side - but one of the ducks was injured from being trampled everytime I go in to feed. So - I thought I'd give them more space.......well - I had a pair of Cayugas and one of them put their head down right on a snapping turtle...we believe. My husband and I fished it out and it's head was taken right off. The neck was still attached - but the head was definitely gone. So, my mom (Glenda_Michigan) told me it HAD to be a snapping turtle. I'm soooo bummed - because I was so looking forward to little Cayuga babies! :) Ah well......I've got venicin thawed out and I'm putting a "turtle line" out....
The DNR website says nighttime is the best....and the bloodier the better - so I'll let ya'll know if I get 'im!!! I'm takin' pictures too when I finally get that rotten thing!

I'm sure my Granny will have some soup recipe waiting! lol

My grandpa use to make turtle soup with snappers. I still see folks once in a while with a nice big snapper crawling in the bed of their pick up truck .... you know where he's going...lol.

Actually I had a guy I know tell me he saw a massive snapper last weekend out near Hubbard Lake....said he had no clue they could get that big, but he knew something that size could do some damage.

Be careful you don't lose a finger etc when trying to catch him. Best of luck and sorry to hear about your duckie. Don't you have some pekins too ?? Maybe you could get someone to trade you a cayuga for a pekin on craigslist or backyardchickens.com

I'm so sorry
We have a lot of snappers around here
I've caught them in my gardens laying eggs.......
and I found one in my koi pond
I was in there cleaning it out and a rock kept getting in my way....
I finally reached down and grabbed the rock....that wasn't a rock

I coulda lost a toe...
they've killed some of my baby ducks
I find them dead in the water with their bellies ripped out

Never tried turtle soup...
is it good?

It's super-extra-good if it's made with a turtle that ate your baby ducks!!

That's interesting. Thanks for the link.

Does anyone know what the fat issue is ? Does it make it taste bad or something ?

So sorry to hear about your babies. I wonder if there is anyway to deter turtles? I'm planning on putting in a garden pond with fish.

Peggy, I read several of your posts from months ago....how are things progressing for you, at your place?

Oh, much better now that the rain has stopped and the sun has come out for more than 30 min. at a time. Whew ! We thought we were going to need to build an ark.
Thank you so much for your inquiry. I sure hope those who have been having drought conditiions get some of it, now that it has moved on. Not the flooding, but the needed rain. Bless you.

We are in that drought, but are finally getting some rain! Still 10" or so below normal.
