The New stuff

Louisville, KY

Each year it seems I breed something new or find new plants through friends and trades. This year has been no different than others. Unfortunatly the weather has not been doing so great with late freezes and drought. The plants are not as large as they usually are though they are still growing.

This frist plant is a mutation off of Colocasia Chicago harliquin. This is not one of mine but new and interesting. The leaves seem to stay a neon green much like Xanthosoma Lime zinger. I have noticed a few with variegated blotched leaves. I am going to grow them out to see what they do.

This next one I have just been growing out. It was given to me from a friend. It is a variegated Black runner. So far I have noticed the following colors in the leaves
Black, yellow , green , pink . orange , red, purple

If the variegation can stay and stay strong this could be a really interesting plant.

This plant was collected by a good friend of mine. He named it Dark Star. So far I have been getting dark Vs out of it but it should be similar to Nancys revenge but with black instead of white.

This is a Plant delights introduction. It looks to me to almost be a Illustrius x fallax hybrid. But from all my attempts Illustrius seems to be sterile for me. Maybe it is a mutations off of illustrius. Colocasia Coalmine

Colocasia black pearl

Has shown to be hardy for the last 2 to 3 years here.

Well I hope you enjoy the pics. My hybrid work on colocasias has been going very well though with this poor growing season. I have had a hard time getting them to a nice size.
I can say I have a few thousand new colocasia hybrids and I have already seen more than 10 new forms that should be introduced. As they mature I will take pics and share. Right now they are just to small.

On another note my Black Colocasia hybrid has survived another winter here. And maybe the first hardy black colocasia. I hope to test it one more season.

Thanks for these pictures. I love colocasias. These particular varieties are new to me. Great collection!

Isn't Plants Delight a kick?

Brian-
Great plants. Colocasia Black Pearl is outstanding.
Any chance that the collected colocasia with the black V is a Hawaiian variety? Looks like one I saw at the research station. I need to go through my descriptions.

Wow,
#1 - lovely colour contrast with the attractive headless model LOL!
#2 - INSTANT plant lust ARRGH!
#3 - Can't wait to see the full mature pattern - I am imagining the side of a house with those alternating between the Nancy's Revenge - that would give the neighbours a show!
#4 - Coalmine, how appropriate (have I mentioned that I LOVE black and purple plants)
#5 - Very lovely subtle pattern.

I normally just lurk here, I've been waiting to post until I have some flowers to show, but these were too gorgeous not to comment on! I have quite a few aroids - Dracunculus vulgaris (my current fave), Arum discoroides (Spotted Arum); A. palaestinum (Black Arum), an unnamed philodendron? (I think), A. Italicum, Arisarum vulgare, various coloured hybrid Callas, Zantedeschia aethiopica (White Arum), Z. aethiopica "Green Goddess", Philodendron "Xanadu", Monstera deliciosa, and some sort of smallish "EE" with small green flowers which is fairly common in gardens here in South Australia. My problem is I covet the hothouse things like Amorphophallus, but I fear my chances of overwintering them are not good.

I've just re-read that list and realised that I must have nearly 20 different kinds if I include all the coloured Callas in the count - Oh hell, I have done it again, yet ANOTHER plant collecting obsession. LOL, Kaelkitty

It all starts with one plant. Now I look at this place and wonder what went wrong? I seem to be unable to say no to aroids or anything with tropical foliage. My plant numbers are a little to high to count anymore. I tried to take inventory a few times but gave up after the first thousand or so.

To bwilliams, "Unable to say no...." Uh-huh, Yep, 'Nods Head', ... Do you think we should start a "Plant Addicts Anonymous" chapter? LOL!

...and to AuntB - If you want one each of Brian's plants, you're going to need a VERY big yard!

I did not go to the open house last week as I spend way to much when I go. So I just called yesterday and told them I was comming to get one. They are going fast.

I'll let you know how it does. And wish I could go to Kentucky.
