Any other kinds of milkweed seeds or pods?

Port Saint Lucie, FL(Zone 9b)

Does anyone have anything other than Asclepias curassavica milkweed (The red and yellow)? After 3 years of rasing these, i would like another kind of milkweed. This season my plants look awful and am going to yank them out and want Monarchs back.

Flutter!
Just cut them down to the ground! They'll come back nicer. It's hard to find anything else here in this part of FL. Well, the giant milkweed...but i've never noticed seeds...Hmmmm!

Wow a giant milkweed? never seen one of those. I will cut these down and I do have some little babies growing underneath them. Just would like some new varieties like Asclepias amplexicaulis (Curley Milkweed), Asclepias incarnata (swamp milkweed), and even maybe Asclepias purpurascens (Purple Milkweed). These are all found in Georgia. They all look cool. There is even a fragrant one but I cannot push my luck.

Flutter-
I bought 2 lovely swamp milkweeds from Sooner Farms(on Dave's list). No seeds yet but it's healthy. I've tried to dig up milkweeds from my sisters place in carolina and they never make it because they've got really long tap roots. I'd see if any Master gardeners in your area have any Giant Milkweed potted up. I know we sell it like crazy at the FL Botanical Garden MG plant sale on October...

Don't forget about me too, Adrienne! I am interested in the Giant Milkweed as well. :-)

Cape Coral, FL(Zone 10a)

I ordered some seeds from www.georgiavines.com and noticed that they have different kinds of milkweeds available. They seem to have really good prices too - and free shipping on most items.

Have you had luck with your milkweeds attracting butterflies? We just purchased our home last year and are in the process of relandscaping, part of the back yard is designated for a hummer and flutter garden - so I'm interested in what everyone has had luck with.

asafla, where is your Botanical Garden and tell me about your sale in Oct - I would be very interested in attending.

Thanks!

Becky,

If you get up to Brevard County, I noticed that Rockledge Gardens had some Giant Milkweed when I was there last week. You could probably check with them. I guess I should have bought some, but didn't. I might have to go back.

NO WAY!!! I wonder if any is left, Terrie???? That's a haul for me (about 50 miles). Maybe I'll call them tomorrow and see if they do have any. Maybe they can hold one or two for me! Thanks for that info! I really appreciate it! The Monarchs eat through all my Scarlett Milkweed like it is candy. I wanted the Giant Milkweed because I thought with it being a much bigger plant that it would last longer as a host. That good news that Rockledge Gardens does now carry it! I haven't been up to that nursery in a while. Time for a road trip and maybe I'll stop by the Native Nursery in Melbourne on my way back! Hee,hee!

I was up at Rockledge Gardens on July 3rd. They were having a 25% off sale on all plants. I'm kicking myself now for not buying one then. I was looking more for dill and parsley and a native passionvine.

BTW - Maple Street Natives now has a "store". It's right on Henry Ave. You don't have to go all the way down to their home nursery. Take Henry off of Minton and it's down about a half mile or less on the south side of the street. It's at a "house".... not a typical shop. Gotta look close for their sign, though.

Thanks Terrie for the info about Maple Street Natives. I didn't know they had a shop. I don't gt up that way very often. I'm usually local down here in little ole Sebastian or Vero Beach. I am definitely going to take a road trip soon! Thanks for clueing me in about the nurseries in Brevard County! :-)))))

Indialantic, FL(Zone 10a)

I know what you mean. My son lives there in Sebastian and I haven't been down to his house in a couple of months. I hadn't been to Rockledge Gardens in months, either. Only went because everyone in my yahoo garden group kept telling me about the sale. I have a tendency to stay close to 192.

lol

If you go to Maple Street, S. Brevard Nursery is right on the corner of Henry and Minton. They always have good plants too. That's where I usually go first for my dill and parsley. The last batch I bought a few weeks ago came complete with a half dozen BST cats.

Yep, me, too! I've gotten these bonuses several times there.

FYI This seed supplier offers a number of different Asclepias. (some I've never heard of). http://hardyplants.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=SP&Category_Code=Asclepias

Be sure to check Garden Watchdog before ordering on line, though.
