hate to be the bearer of bad news but peony cannot be started from seed, the "seeds" are sterile.

the only way you can "start" new peony is from division.

newarkslones: I'm not sure you are correct stating that peony cannot be started from seed, the seeds are sterile. If that were true, how come this site (http://www.paeonia.com/html/peonies/propagation.htm) tells you how to grow them from seed. It might be possible that some of the newer varieties are sterile, but I don't think the old fernleaf peony is.

Anyone else know the answer to this question????

Everyone: I have decided that the peony seeds aren't dry enough and will get back to people when I transplant them in September or else I will start a new thread. Ruth

ok, so I read the article. everything I've ever read and everyone I have talked too says you can't do it, but hey if you have the patience to try it, go for it!!! but they don't come true so you have to wait 7 years to find out what you are getting. seems like a long time for me to wait! The article does state that MOST seeds are sterile, so if you try it good luck!!
