I found a strange caterpillar on my parsley and dill a few days ago. I put him and the plant it a private cage. Does anyone know what he might be? I figure it's probably a moth of some kind. He's not fuzzy, very dark brown with a darker brown and beige pattern on his back. I tried to get a couple of good pictures of it.

Could be an Armyworm, they have those black triangles along their back.

The picture sure does look like the armyworm. And it does curl up into a ball when it's disturbed. I'll have to watch it and see if it makes the inground chamber to pupate.
Thanks!
I found one the other day and ...well, it's just hard to get excited about an armyworm moth. I relocated him on some shrubs that I really don't care for. He looked exactly like yours.
I did a google search on the armyworm and found out they can really damage a lawn. The pictures on some of the other sites didn't look anything like mine. I'm curious to see what it turns out to be. I've noticed before that a lot of times when you search for something different sites have different information and different pictures.

Army worm...I get them in my dill too. They get dropped down into one of the cyclinders buried in the yard that houses my sprinkler system wiring. There are always toads in there :o)
