Or a general Ginger question...
Do they burn in full sunlight? I'm in zone 10.
WHite Butterfly Ginger question...
Yikes! In z10 I wouldn't know, but I have heard people say that they grow in filtered light, or a lightly shaded area better than full sun. This is the first year I'm trying both and it does seem to be true that the one in a little shade is happier.
I have had other gingers get kinda scorched in full sun, some curcumas, alpinia zerumbet variegata, zingiber mioga, and others when bringing them out in spring, but they seem to recover fine. I'm in z7B, so hopefully birdlady liz or one of the other experts can give some advice that will better pertain to your area ;)
YES, zone 10 Hedychiums need morning sun and afternoon shade or filtered light, as a general rule. I am in Zone 9a/8b in north central Florida where the summers are a scorcher. We grow only a few gingers in full sunlight, most follow the morning sun/afternoon shade rule. You do have Globbas and Kaempferia that are shade/filtered light all day. The you have a few Costus that will do full sun, most half and half then a few that do the filtered light all day.

that is what I thought!

You are qwite welcome. ma'am. We were just down your way a couple of weeks agao. We sold plants at the Punta Gorda Hibiscus Festival. We met some really nice people there. We also were able to spend Sunday goinf back and forth between John Banta's and Jim Conyer's houses, aquiring some new gingers. i had a blast, they are truly very kind people.

I didn't make it to that I was so upset! I really wanted to go!
Darn... That would have been fun to go!
interesting, Miss Clare. never heard of anyone growing 'em in full sun
not yet, but I will. Just today somebody told me that the taller the ginger, the more sun tolerant. Don't know how factual this is, though. Turns out my friend Becky grows her in sun and shade. Both do well. We had a garden club mtg and she brought a bouquet arranged w/ gingers (white, Dr Moy and something else), cannas, and roses. it was gorgeous.
Nery, when you cut your gingers for cut flowers, do you wait until you see buds and one or two flowers open, or do you wait until the whole stalk is in flower? I am wondering when the best time to cut is for optimum flowers.
That is so neat that your friend Becky made a flower bouquet out of ginger, cannas, and roses. I stuck some roses in mine too and some tuberose and was in heaven. Then I made some banana bread and thought I died and went to heaven with all the fragrance in the house! LOL!
I have both the short and tall white Butterfly ginger, and the taller ones are way ahead of the shorter ones this year. The shorter ones are just forming buds now. They are in the same bed with the short ones in front.
I myself have not made ginger bouquets. Becky's flowers were partially open. I guess it would be like w/ the cannas, partially open so you can extend/enjoy the life of the arrangement.
C, you had a great day today, at least your nose did, lol
Thanks, Nery. I guess the trick is not to cut too soon or too late;-) Yes, I had a good day today;-) I had to make some sourdough bread in the breadmaker just to extend the smell around the house! LOL!
