cilantro growing problems

East Andover, NH

My cilantro has very weak stems and has stopped growing after reaching about a 2 inch height. It is in a clay pot in eastern garden window. I am careful to not overwater. Anyone have an idea what I am doing wrong? Thanks

Maybe not enough sun? Light from eastern window tend to be weaker than light from western windows. Try moving it. I have a different problem, I can't maintain my cilantro. My plants keep developing seed heads. So much for cilantro, I keep getting coriander instead.. Grrrrrr.

Cilantro does not grow for very long....it is one of the fastest herbs to get leggy and go to seed. There is another kind of cilantro (if you're going for the flavor) that does not look like the traditional parsley/dill shaped plant. It has long flat jagged leaves, about 3/4 inch wide, and is better suited for climates that are not great for growing cilantro normally.
Look for it under these names: "Mexican Cilantro", "Mexican Coriander","Culantro" and "Eryngium foetidum".

"Porophyllum ruderale ssp. macrocephalum "
Also try "Papalo".

yeahh... I just bought the seed. I haven't tried that one yet..

CILANTRO IS A SHORT LIVED PLANT BEFORE "GOING TO SEED". IF THE ROOT ZONE HITS 75F IT WILL BOLT. THERE IS NOTHING THAT I KNOW OF TO PREVENT THIS.
CULANTRO AND PAPALO ARE FAIR SUBSTITUTES IN WARMER CLIMATES

Try getting the cilantro cultivar of "Santo". It takes much longer to go to seed.

THANKS BETTY. I HAD FORGOTTEN ABOUT THAT CULITIVAR

In my climate, it makes better sense to grow cilantro outdoors in the fall, then it goes through winter and seeds out in spring. I tried Papalo and I hated the taste...definitely not like cilantro! I wonder how the "Santo" would do here. Where do you get seed?

POTTSBORO, TX(Zone 7b)

LINDA,
"SANTO" SEED CAN BE ORDERED FROM RICHTER'S SEED VIA THE INTERNET

This is my third year trying to grow it. It either gets too much sun and not enough water or vice versa. I thought cilantro was easy to grow, NOT!

It comes up every year in my garden from seed that scattered. It does need a little sun, water and fertilizer to do well. VORTREKER, thanks for the info on "Santo" seed!
