If you have a rooster the bare back is mostly likely from him breeding your chicken (if its a hen).

There is no rooster, she is pulling the feathers out herself.

Are they overcrowded or underfed or maybe they aren't getting enough protein. Are they in a dirt pen with no grass to peck on?
Some people feed chickens just cracked corn or scratch grains and they need some protein like what is provided in layer formula feed and fresh greens as well.
Hens also need oyster shell for calcium and minerals.

Is she getting bitten by mites ?

I read somewhere that feeding lettuce will help. And it does! So long as we keep the feeders and water containers full, ours our pretty good. They do seem to get bored though and they get a little feather picky just before it rains?? Ours really do like lettuce though and corn on the cob too. So long as we keep them busy, they behave. We try to keep any bald spots or picked at spots painted with pine tar and they leave them alone.
