HD misinformation

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

I was in HD's garden dept. today, and saw, at a distance, what I thought was a red japanese maple, but upon closer inspection, it was clearly something else. The tag said "Variegated Hibiscus". A man walked up and asked the cashier what it was, and she told him it was a sugar maple. I pointed out to her that the tag clearly said, "Hibiscus", and "althea" was written on it, too. She insisted it was a sugar maple....I just walked away.

So HD employees are dumb in Kentucky too? Wow, I thought it was just a Southern California thing ;-)

LOL I wonder if the man bought one, got it home, and THEN read the tag...sad.

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Whether it was a sugar maple or JM, I'm sure he got it cheap bc the hibiscus would have been a lot less than those trees...huh? :)

Yeah, that's what made me look--the hand printed sign offered a discount (don't remember how much), and I have put off buying a japanese maple due to the priciness. LOL

I too waited and waited...and then our local "large garden center"...called Red Barn...had a remodeling sale and all JM's were at 1/2 price! I bought 8 of them that were in 20 gallon tubs and overwintered them in the tubs. Just planted in about 40 gallon zinc planters about 2 months ago...and then line some steps that (will) lead down to my pool area. I love them! My next-door neighbor is a bonsai expert in Texas and said they will act like bonsai in the pots...cool.

Wow--lucky you! I'm soooo jealous! And the deer won't eat those--hibiscus are on the list of "deer resistant plants", but the varmints bit off the flowers on mine last winter....grrrrr

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

That list needs to be written! The deer munch on my 2 JMs every time I forget to put the chicken wire back around them!!!
And they had the nerve to get up on my deck & stripped every leaf off my yellow hibiscus! They eat Texas Star Hibiscus, 5 tomato plants, & several other thingss. But never broke any stems! I think it is the teenagers!
They are not supposed to eat plumerias but they stripped every leaf off of 15 of them. Didn't waste a leaf, none found on the ground! lol

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

Someone will smoke themselves sick on that ... eck...

Brenham, TX(Zone 8b)

there is a sugar maple hibiscus that looks like a small japanese maple.

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

But the clerk said it IS a sugar maple tree...LOL
