Azolla

Texas/Okla central b, United States(Zone 7b)

Red azolla is covering my large earthen pond. I know nothing about it. Is it toxic? It is quite beautiful, but I am afraid my fish won't get enough sun and oxygen. Is it a desirable plant? I have seen on some threads that it is wanted in the trades.......LMK soon.....I have tons.....or LMK if I should be trying to rid my pond of it.

You might find azolla helps cut down water loss by evaporation, a useful feature in a drought. If it gets to mass up thick, think about setting up a harsh mist spray to blast it to one side and scoop it out, it makes a useful mulch

No, its harmless to fish, but might present problems of pollution in the first frosts when it all dies off, and can contribute toward smothering the pond of light and oxygen

It is a good floater. Your fish will continue to get oxygen. Your goal should be to cover approx 60% to prevent the sun in, as this will cut down on the sun supporting the growth of algae. You will need some open water so you can see your fish!

If you want to, you can use the extra for a trade, or send to others for postage, when you need to remove some from time to time.
