SIlkie chicken neck problem

Antrim, NH

Oh it has been a busy 24 hours here at Le Coop D'Etat! Sahara, a young silkie pullet(?) has had the strangest thing happen to her neck. She is holding it cocked sideways and upside down! She looks like she is having little seizures getting it straightened out again.

I was thinking she got a blow to the head, but someone told me that it may be a vitamin e deficiency, which silkies are prone to. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

So, to treat it, I'm giving her some antibiotics ( in case she has some sort of ear infection ,etc) and a high vitamin e diet, with raw shelled sunflower seeds, diced spinach, some egg for strength mixed in with her feed along with a vitamin e supplement mixed in. I'll keep you updated!

That would be distressing. It's hard to envison, do you have a pic ?? Does she appear to be in pain ?? Are the others picking on her.... I know they can be vicious if they feel another bird is weak or ill......

I mix a bag of flax seed into my scratch mix (along with other things) and I believe it gives them a little extra vitamin E.

To be honest I've never heard of an E problem. I know there are issues with vitamin D and rickets in chickens .

Good luck, hope it works out for the best !!!

She's in the chicken hospital ( my dog's crate) and looks a little better, I think. I'm going to try to get a picture of her doing the weird straightening out thing, but it happens so quickly!

I think ( hope) that it is happening less, so maybe it is working out. Apparently the vitamin e thing is a silkie issue? Not sure.

If the silkie's neck is up side down and tring to straightened out
it may be broken my year old silkie did that and had to put her down..
Sorry but it sounds like it is broken...

Well, after doing more research, I'm thinking it may be a neurological issue. I'm going to keep giving her vitamin e and see what happens.
