Uh oh! Splayed leg?

Howell, MI

I need some help - I was gone for a week of vacation and a friend was tending my ducks....
one of my Pekin ducks is now limping....I think it "may" be splayed leg - but I don't know what it looks like....or how to take care of it....

We believe she started limping friday...but we're not real sure.....

Thanks so much!!!

I could be wrong but splay leg is usually when the leg is cocked out to the side and the bird cannot stand up on it.... it typically appears in new hatches or very young hatchlings. Again I could be wrong but it sounds more like you have an injury than splay leg. I would think your birds would be too old to start showing splay leg.

Did you look at the foot pad, the webbing/toes and leg for an injury or swelling ?? Perhaps try to keep the duck more confined to keep it from walking too much.

Do they climb to hop up and down a ramp or are they in the water yet ?? I know mine don't show the most finesse hopping out of the water (kiddie pool and a big rubbermaid tub)

How badly is it limping ?? If it' is worrying you , you might want to consider a vet (although some vets won't do farm animals...call first).

Good luck

Julie,

I checked the legs - nothing seemed...odd. It does seem as though the right foot is angled inwards....but I could be wrong. She's able to stand up and walk - she just does so limping.

Unless you think otherwise, I'm guessing it's an injury of some sort. I'll keep watching to see how she does....

Actually - the more I think about it - she (my friend) let them swim the other day and had said that the ducks had a hard time getting in and out of the duck house....something that I know needs fixing - but since I carry the ducks individually out of the duck house to swim - I hadn't worried about it. It'll be taken care of tomorrow.....

Anyways....that's probably just it....hmmmm......still concerns me though. :)

julie hows the baby doing? did it make it?
i had a couple guinea keets that wanted to walk on the side of their foot, with the first one i didnt know what to doa nd now she walks on the top of her foot but shes ok.
with the second i had just read Illumination in the Flatwoods: A Season with the Wild Turkey by joe hutto and he had a turkey go splay leg and he massaged it 10 min every few hours and it was ok so i tried it on the 2nd keets foot and now it walks the way its supposed to

My baby made it - it was an injury - after a week or so, he stopped limping....which made
me breathe a sigh of relief!!!! :)
