Brugs not blooming ?

Dothan, AL(Zone 8b)

I sarted a couple Brugs from a cutting last winter.Than I planted it outdoors and they are growing but they are not blooming. One is a little over a foot tall and te other one is about three feet tall. Any ideas wha to do ? Or do they need to get some age on them

Mansfield, TX(Zone 8a)

They need to make a "Y" at the top before they bloom so probably just need some time :-)

If they are actively growing, make sure to fertilize them agressively. A couple times a week is not too much.

The same brug that I cut off last fall, and shared with friends locally. Their cuttings are making flowers! My original plant however has not. Erick, I'm now convinct that you're absolutely right! They're heavy feeders! And I haven't fed mine enough! Also, they require alot of watering as well. Those of us have them in the ground. Due to our severe drought this year. I've observed neighboring brugs that are not getting supplemental springler water. They look considerably stunted, and decreased performance compared to that of years past. Thank you, Erick for sharing your observation. (Made a believer out of me!)
Linda; besure to keep your brug well watered before fertilize them to avoid root injury. When they're in pots, excess water/fertilizer will be washed out with frequent watering, as much as they needed, their is not a problem there.

If found that the brugs seem to be more responsive if you foliar feed them -- early in the morning. That may help some too.

Indiana Lily - what kind of foliar spray do you use?

I use Peter's 20-20-20 at least once a week, and then once every 3 weeks I use Messenger. This picture of Adeline, Orange Custard, Unknown Triple White, Mountain Magic and Mountain Treasure was taken on June 21....

Here are the same brugs this morning, 2 1/2 weeks later (excuse the yellow look in the leaves, the sun was at a strange angle). Everyone's results are different, though. Some like the new Miracle Grow, others use different things. It's kinda like trial and error. :)

Thank you very much, Lily, for the kind comments. After lots of trial and error, I have come to learn that Brugs are HEAVY feeders when they are actively growing. There were times last summer where I was fertilizing them every other day and they didn't mind one bit. I never saw any evidence of over-fertilization. To the contrary, they bloomed up a storm in response!

Erick

P.S. I use a balanced fertilizer, e.g. Peters 20-20-20, but everyone has their favorite!

I've been feeding my year-old plants with 15-30-15 weekly since putting them outside in early May. They have responded lustily with lots of green growth around all the nodes, but no signs of bloom yet. I am impatient!

Erick, I owed you one, lol. THANK-YOU!!
Indiana_Lily, I foliage fed mine this am, putting good advices into action. :-)

Linda,
I haven't had much experiences as far as growing brugs in our area, though your zone is some what different than mine. Sounds like you've done everything right to your brugs. I'm not sure of the difference b/w planting our brugs in the ground versus in pots culture. I suspect that the cuttings (last Fall) that went on and blooms, because the energy stored from the previous year growth. Conclusion: the timing factor. With that said, I've this unknown white cultivar, which was planted in a big pot and left outdoor last year. It sprouted back out from the ground this May, and gave me its 1st flush of flower last week.
Where as my pink brugs in the ground hasn't yet showing sign of mature. While the same brug at my neighbor are having blooms. So it's a matter of waiting game. Oh, by the way (this same pink one didn't bloom until last Nov. - while neighbor's bloomed around July). So where all the more experienced growers? Please come and help us out. lol

Linda,
Do you have a picture? You might check for spider mites contributing to the yellow leaves. Although some brugs just tend to do that anyway. As far as no blooms, it's all about environmental conditions and the individual plant. Sure doesn't seem fair though!
I can totally relate, I've got 1 blooming out of about 80+ brugs so yeah, I'm battling caterpillars and Katidids daily.. I'm pullin my hair out too.. I'm gonna get bald spots soon! LOL

It look very much like my white noid brug. Does it get adequate sun in the day Linda? Also, it's normal for them to shed some older leaves under that hot summer sun. But, on close up, some leaves appeared they've been chewed on by some type of small insects. Besides that what I just observed. It could be any day now when your brugs will form buds for you. In midle of June, we'd a brief period of unseasonal cool evening/night temp. I was wondering if that helped mine to go on a gave me the 1st flush of blooms? Since most brugs do bloom in the cool-temp. of Autumn. Hope other will chime in.....

Not sure what has been chewing on them.I dusted it with seven dust, but that's not helping. If you notice white stuff on the leaves ,I have sprayed it for disese. It is getting a lot of sun.I have got a bed made for it, so at some point I am going to move it.I just moved into my home this year, and I made the mistake of just taking my newly rooted Brugs and sticking them in the ground.Wonder if it needs more shade ? I will be so happy to see what color blooms it will have.

Linda, my experience has been, morning sun (until noon or so), only for most Brugs. Too much sun just stresses them.
Those yellow leaves are pretty normal, and you shouldn't worry too much about them, just pick them off. I say that because I also see some very nice green leaves. If the WHOLE plant was yellow and curling, that would be different.
I've been doing some experimenting with Bayer systemic fertilizer (rose food), and the Brugs really seem to like it, and although it's not 100% against spider mites, it really helps with most of the bugs.
Caution, if you decide to try the Bayer product, only use it every 3-4 weeks, and only about 1 to 2 tablespoons (depending on size of the plant) at a time, because it can/will burn them.
HTH,
Teresa
