These palms are showing up everywhere in Eastern NC

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

I don't know the name of these but I love them and want to make them live in this part of the state...anyone know what it is?

The have those kinda spiraled, cascade leaves

Here's the only other pic I have, but you can see how the fronds curl...awesome. I wish we had room in the car so I could have gotten one.

those are butias, I have a few in the yard that are much smaller-but they came thru last winter just fine. I got mine from a palm nursery in Eastern NC

Thanks for the name tigerlily and the hardiness info, now I know I have to get one next time I go home. It looks to be butia capitata from plantfiles' info. Thanks so much again!

New Bern, NC

Here is a link to Gary's Nursery in New Bern. They specialize in palms for this area.

Thanks for the link John, interestingly, it states that the butia is only marginally hardy in New Bern, but apparently that tigerlily can make anything she touches hardy!

I know when I go back home next time if I can fit one in the car, it is coming home with me..lol

I wish Tropicanna! If I thought that were true-oh...the things I would be planting here! I did find a Phoenix sylvestris at HD this summer that I planted in the yard-I figure that if it dies, I can get my $ 70 back-right?? lol

Here is a Livistona chinensis that survived this winter-of course I wrapped it several times when it went down to 17 degrees, but it looks pretty good. I find that more and more I am not paying strict attention to the zone limits that are put on plants. I think the L. chinensis is put at zone 9.

See, there you go, tigerlily, yet another plant I thought about leaving out, but I don't know about wrapping, I like things that thrive under total neglect (well, maybe some mulch, but othr than that..lol).

I feel like sending you my plant list and saving myself the trouble of researching...lol...how much would that cost!

Raleigh, NC(Zone 7b)

plant list for what? Things that you have and are wondering about planting outside? I don't mind taking a look at it-but there are so many variables-where and when you plant it-what kind of winters you have (as opposed to me...I don't even know where Clemmons is-is it west or east of me??? lol)
I say-just go for it! Thats what I do-esp if it is at least rated a zone 8

I must say-there were a few times when it was cold in the afternoon when I didn't feel like going out there and wrapping it-and it only took a few minutes-but now that it made it through-I am glad that I did.

Here is a shot of the front bed-all the tropicals that you see there (not the lantana and coleus) made it thru the winter

Very beautiful bed, I was joking about the list. You know where Winston-Salem is? Clemmons is just outside of W-S on the west side. It's about 1 1/2, 2 hours from Raleigh.

Oddly enough I haven't bought lanatana in 2 years but they have reseeded reliably and I end up with decent, blooming plants by the end of the season. Torenias, too, they are everywhere.

Grantsboro, NC(Zone 8b)

Well how much does Gary charge for the palms? Does anyone know? I called and they would not give me a price. Thought I could go by there when at our place just past New Bern but maybe not.
If they charge a arm and a leg no need for me to look.
