Rooting blueberries

Pawling, NY(Zone 5b)

Does anyone know about rooting blueberry (sunshine dwarf variety)? The blueberry plant is growing a bit rampant and I'm thinking of cutting off some of the new growths to train the plant to grow into a more desirable shape. Any thoughts anyone?

Okay... Feeling a bit lonely here.. Do people here not have experience rooting blueberries???

I don't know the answer, but I would like to. I'm watching, too. You have company here, but not the knowledgeble type, alas..

I took a quick look at Raintree because they are usually pretty good about giving quick tips on propagating their stuff. But all they said for blueberries under method was 'softwood cuttings, hard to root.'

Not encouraging. Sorry.

Well, this is as close as I could find for a hopefully, postive answer:

thank for the link Glendale. Well, I'm trying it.. I can't find any info if I should water it with acid fertilizer while it's rooting.. Humm... I wonder..

If you already have the bush to take a cutting from, it's not a loss if it doesn't work -- so you might as well try it. I don't think you should fertilize until after you know you have roots.

It did occur to me late last night, that you could use a rooting hormone on the cuttings before you plant them. That would help. I also see that people use Super Thrive for cuttings and transplants. Many of them swear by it. I haven't used it because I can't buy it anywhere in this town. See what kind of rooting hormone you can get at your local nursery. Hopefully, it is a better place to get gardening supplies than in this town.

I have rooting hormone and SuperThrive. I used rooting hormone on it. I use SuperThrive 1-2 times a month when I water.. I will use that too for the cuttings. Thanks for the idea.. Wouldn't have crossed my mind.

I just bought some blueberry bushes and this is the way he said to root them. Take a cutting and put in in a pot of small pinebark and keep the bark wet all the time and it will root. you can grow them in the pine bark if you keep it wet. give it cottonseed meal and mircle grow for acid plants as a treat. he had lots and lots of blue berry bushes he had rooted this way....Good luck ...Fran

Cool.. I will try that. Thank you..

I wonder if the rabiteye bluberries we grow here in warmer part of NC are the same to root as the highbush types (V. corymbosum) grown farther North. I just read in my Dirr book, Manual of Woody Landscape Plants, 5th ed., under V. corymbosum propagation, that

"Cuttings, especially softwood, collected in June root readily under mist in peat:perlite when treated with1000 ppm IBA; I have had good success this way; a rooting hormone may not be necessary but is always a good safeguard".

Me again, I always use the rooting hormone powder on everything and I always use vermiculite to root in. Both are at my nearby Lowes store. My current rooting attempt at rabiteyes seems to be working, still green but no new growth yet. It is sooo hot here (102 yesterday) If I had a misting machine I'm sure it would help. I still wonder if they will make it. Hope this helps you- good luck!

Thank you.. My rooting attempts already died. No such luck for me.. It was going well for a while but it died last week.. No change really cept I opened up the humidity dome to add more water... Apparantly that was it though.. Think I'll get some pine bark and try it again with some acid soil.. See if that helps..
