Porterweed question

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

At what point do you deadhead those snaky flower spikes on Porterweed? They just keep getting taller but they are still blooming. I hate to cut off flowers but the plants are getting ugly.

I deadhead after they bloom. Usually the "snakey thing" will turn black on the end. You can always cut it back a bit.....you might just loose some of your blooms.

I know it looks a little unsightly, but I wait until the entire spike is brown/black and then just snap it off the plant. If you don't like how ugly it looks, try allowing a few in the back of the plant (that aren't as easy to see) to do that and get rid of the rest. You get quite a few seeds in each spike and if your plant is anything like mine ..... it constantly produces the spikes/seeds!

Thanks, I'll try and be patient. LOL
