I got this guy a few years ago at a nursery, he had no tag. From the flowers I believe him to be a Codonanthe, no idea which one, but he's always blooming his little pink flowers.
Unknown Codonanthe
gorgeous! I'm really falling for these. How are you growing it?
It looks like a cross with nematanthus - perhaps something like Codonatanthus Aurora. You might take a gander over the Codonatanthus section at http://gesneriads.ca/genemcod.htm
Thank you!! I think you are right!! I keep him just to the side of a south facing window. I water him good when he is dry as far down as I can stick my finger into the soil, roughly first knuckle. Even if I forget occasionally, he is very forgiving.
Very pretty!
Maybe mine will be something special, too.
Interested in how you are managing it to... maybe I won't kill mine if I get pointers now...lol
MsC
haven't tried one of these yet.........
Gail I can add a piece of mine to our fall trade if you like... it's kina cute.
MsC

Gail you have mail...
Oh, that is a Beautiful Plant Threegardeners! I have a little Codonanthe 'Paula' that I got in a trade from Raingazer. I just love it! Mine hasn't bloomed yet but I'm hoping to someday see some blooms on her! The one I have is a mini I think!? Hey Raingazer, are you out there? Is the plant you sent me considered a mini? I am just guessing ... tiny leaves - very cute!
Rain, are you hiding Codananthe 'Paula'?????????? just teasing...........great looking plant, Lin........it will double, triple in size.........
So .... the leaves will stay tiny, but the plant will actually get fuller? I am wondering if I should pot it up to a larger pot? It's my first Codonanthe and I want to keep it alive.
hi Lin, Paula is a cultivar of Codonanthe devosiana, which is a trailer. You can grow it in a ground cover sort of a way, or hanging. Photos in plantfiles http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/119270/
I think Rain's plant comes from me, which comes from a friend of mine - she supplied me with Sinn pusilla and White Sprite and Rio das Pedras as well, at a time when Rio and White Sprite were still relatively difficult to find.
we crossposted.:-) It is a shallow rooted plant - in nature reportedly grows on ant hills. I grow mine dry, but people report it doing well in terrariums as well as wicked.
Maybe it is like most plants.......it just wants you to start taking cuttings over and over until it gets real thick...........just take cuts and stick them in the same pot, Lin?????
Oh isn't that something ... a Plant beginning with one DG'er and bits and pieces traveling to other DG'ers around the Country!! The True Gift of Sharing!
My little plant is kinda on the dry side and not wicked. I thought about wicking it, but never got around to it. Maybe I will take a couple of little pieces and put them in a glass jar to see how it does in the terrarium conditions! I think my Sinn. pusilla came from Raingazer too and the Rio das pedras came from Jannich .... isn't it fun, so many different people, different lifestyles, different ways of gardening, planting, growing and yet all sharing in the joy of these wonderful plants!
I am so glad I found this Gardening Community! The two forums I visit most are Gessie's and House Plants ..... I lurk on a lot of others once in awhile and everyone I've met in this Garden has been so kind and generous with plants as well as information on different plants. I say Thank You .... My Friends!
Lin.... I am right with you!!! So cool to think of where the original plant came from and then through trades and gifts several DGer's have plants!! I recently did a trade with Rain and she generously sent me cuttings from both Codonanthe Carnosa and Codonanthe Paula...So we're related now :))))
I love the small thick leaves on these! Mine are looking good in their cake dome (along with a begonia leaf and babies she sent me) so I hope to have them rooting right up!
~Brenda
I really like the sharing too. Sometimes I run into people and suddenly realize I have part of their plant. Then again, some gesneriads in the US all come from one plant that someone brought back and propagated, so we are all related. LOL.
You don't need big pieces of the Codonanthe. You can just put down a single pair of leaves (with a bit of the stem between the leaves) into a terrarium and it will root and grow. They are pretty easy to propagate in a terrarium or under a dome.
Yep Brenda ... we are all related by our little plant trading! Isn't this Garden a wonderful place!
Key, I can just imagine how long the list would be if we could keep a "family tree" of sorts on a plant .... where it started .... original country and it's ongoing journey to the U.S.A. ..... and each person and State the plant travels to! That would be so interesting and fun!
Ok ... I'm going to go take some little leaves from the Codonanthe and put them in a terrarium now!
Key, I've done hoyas the way you are mentioning here (with two leaves and a bit of stem on either side) and had excellent success. It is so interesting to see that new stem come up and the plant start growing from just those two leaves! So maybe I'll take a little snip or two from these cuttings from Rain (or cut them all up??) and try that in a terrarium to really get a fuller plant.
Yes, Lin this Garden is a wonderful place!!!!
I'm supposed to working today editing a video for my DH so I guess I better get to it now that I've checked in here. LOL

Beautiful plant, three! I'm glad Ki helped you with the ID, cause I didn't have a clue. :o)
Gail, I can send you cuttings of my Codonanthes, too. And Brenda, I'll send you more to help you get a full pot more quickly.
Lin, I thought I sent you cuttings of Codonanthe carnosa, but evidently I didn't. I meant to, if that means anything. LOL I'll send you some soon.
Ki, 'Paula' did indeed come from you, as did C. carnosa and Sinningia pusilla. You sent me seeds of Rio, but the seedlings were lost to thrips. :oP
I think it's fabulous that we all share plants, cuttings, seeds, etc. I really do enjoy trades more than purchases. :o) It's nice to send a picture to someone a few months later and show them how much the plant they sent you has grown. Warm, fuzzy feelings abound! LOL
Gail, I have indeed been hiding both of my Codonanthes. ;o) They're mad at me and not blooming. Guess if I'd give them more water, light, and fertilizer, they'd be happy and bloom again. Here they are. C. carnosa on the left, C. devosiana 'Paula' on the right.
They look healthy..............why don't you sock it to 'em with either a 12-36-10 or even Super Bloom or something equivalent.......where the phosphorous number is in the 50's or 60's??????????
Threegardeners, that is absolutely beautiful!
I love the tiny foliage with the pink flowers :)
I am just now getting into Gessie's. I thought because I couldn't grow an AV that I couldn't grow any of them but I'm finding my lipstick plants and goldfish plants to be a little more forgiving than the numerous AV's I've killed.
I have actually rooted 2 plants of my Pagoda Lipstick Plant and just now took MORE cuttings to make another plant.....can't keep up with it *lol*
I like that one...nice looking plant...it is the only one I simply cannot get a blossom from......I have the one with the red flowers (supposedly).
I really like this particular lipstick plant because even when it's not in bloom, the foliage is very pretty. The backs of the leaves are purple. Do you have this one? If all the cutting I took last week root, would you like a 4 inch pot of it? Just let me know.
Here is one of my tiny Goldfish plants. I have no idea what the "real" name of it is but it has small leaves and I have found I'm in love with small leaves :)
Kim
Thank you for the offer, I do have it....just never blooms...silly thing...
Nice looking goldfish too(clog plant)....I don't know their exact names but I have an orange one, a red one and just a couple weeks ago I found a yellow one!!! Never knew they came in so many colours.
