i never have luck with the red but that was in days of old when i didn't have a clue how to garden so i am feeling lucky these days. but thought i would ask if anybody has had success with the red before i invested in any. thanks.
does anyone in texas grow red bee balm.....jacob cline?
I've had experience with it, but not success. I've had it die 3 for 3 times I've planted it, so I've given up on it. If you do try it, let me know how it works out. Maybe I can figure out what I did wrong!
well i was reading about jacob cline........it was hybridized in the south somewhere so i am thinking it might live here. do you have a clue what it doesn't like about tx.? is it clay? did you amend your soil any of the 3 times that you planted it? or did you put it directly into clay? i did not amend the soil any of the times i tried to grow it as i was too dumb to know what to do with this dirt.
Yea, right! You are now dumb like a fox since you started coming to the Garden! lol
:~)
lol. hey girl.
well google jacob cline monarda. magnolia gardens, a tx. based company, comes up and from what i understand about them they are after plants that will grow in good 'ol texas. and i misquoted on my 2nd post ..........this monarda is not a hybrid.........it was found growing in georgia. the only thing different about georgia is that they prob. have acid soil and prob. the dirt is sandier than ours. i am now thinking that this dry clay kills red monarda. well i am going to go for it and i will certainly post if it actually remains alive. lol.
" what yall thank? "
I drove out to Magnolia Gardens to see how far it was fr my house. They were in need of an accountant & you know me, I'm always looking for a job closer to home. This commute is killing me!
It is about 25 miles fr me on the westside of Magnolia proper. Wouldn't have saved me anytime or driving, to go to work there, so I never followed up on the job.
Looked up there website. Kewl plant. If they are growing & selling it fr down here, I may have to ck it out.
You can never have too much RED in your yard!
:~)
'at's what i was thinkin'. lol. i am going to get some in trade and try it.
and smockette...........doesn't that place have a good reputation for finding plants that grow well in texas?
Yep, just like we do @ the Farm! In fact, I just wrote them a ck Thurs for something we got fr them in liners. They buy fr us & we buy fr them as wholesalers.
i have written magnolia as i am in an off daves co-op. some of us are always looking for a new southern wholesaler and i would love to see what all they grow. do their liners look good?
Mamajack, the ones I tried were in a rasied bed of well amended soil. Other plants that did well in the same bed were Mystery Gardenia, Esperanza, Plumbago and Camelia Japonica. I don't think the ph of the soil was the problem since the gardenia and camelia did fine there. They always looked good until we hit July and August. My opinion was the combination of high heat and high humidity did them in. None of them lived past August.
well read up on jacob cline...........doesn't it sound like to you that this one might make it?
oh, sheila please let us know next year when it's hot and dry if it lives. this is a great year for plants in texas. that is just gorgeous.
I had the red Jacob Cline... beautiful the first year.... the second year it was full of Mildew .... Sheila, your is beautiful ... is your mildew free? They were suppose to come out with one that is.
and sylvia, the jacob cline is it i think. lol. i read that it was mildew resistant. is that what happens to them..........the heat and humidity kill them because of mildew?
So far so good.
I dont remember how long ... bur its been a while. I got mine at Spring Hill ... beautiful red ... mutiplied fast the first year.Dont dare water them from the top.
Barb where are you looking? I would try them again if they are in myprice range! I need to stop buying plants... saw a sign at Ace 75% off all plants
ace hardware? what kind of plants do they have? lol. our ace in rockwall never has plants. where is this one?
i need a place to go look for s. greggii. who i dallas has good selections of salvia?.........4 in. pots, please. unless it's something really nice and different.
this jacob cline is going to be a trade so we'll see pretty quick. it can't rain in texas all summer, can it?
I have also tried Jacob Kline and have not had much luck with it.
